I just have to ask, the restaurant your talking about isn't RUI'S by any chance, have to honest I thought it was great value for money. Secondly, the expression "feckin' eejet" is , by Irish standards, quite harmless, noy meant to be as derogatory as it might appear.

Firstly being called a fecking eejit is mildly offensive and unnecessary in the context.

Anyway - I went to Ruis in Silves last night. I booked a table a few days ago.

When we got there at our allotted time of 8.30pm the restaurant was absolutely full, there was a waiting queue outside of 15 people (I know because I counted them).

When we left at 10.15pm, the queue outside had risen to 33 people (again, I counted them) and every table was full in the restaurant.

Majority of people in the restaurant and queuing were Portuguese ...

I spent 120 euros for two people - had the full works and it was amazing. I may be a fecking eejit according to some on here, but I am definitely a gourmet fecking eejit (or should I say gourmand ...)

which proves my point, is there really a "crise" when people are lining up to spend such an amount of money on an evening meal?

Perhaps its true in Portugal what they say about Greece "its a poor county full of rich people"

Or something along those lines!

Re IVA on electricity, I find that absolutlely scandalous if it goes ahead. Especially when they talk about dropping IVA on golf, golf isn't a necessity but electricity is.

I would go to whatever restuarant you fancy and order what ever you like, because it sounds as if very soon it will be bratwurst and sauerkraut only on the menu -

As Maggie once famously said " socialism only fails when it runs out of other people's money" all these tax increases will reduce the overall tax take as people find ways to avoid paying it.

Not according to Portuguese TV last night. Saying 23% for gas and electric is likely

ireland and portugal accepted the bailout and have to accept the consequences, however raising vat on restaurants (and probably hotels) is counter productive and will yield nothing extra in the end.

ireland had 3 rates of vat until very recently . 0% on footstuffs, 13% on service industry and 21% on everything else, this to rise to 22% next year and 23% the year after.

however the 13% on service industry has been reduced to 10% recently in the case of - hotels, restaurants, hair dressers etc etc ie labour intensive industries in order to try and stimulate business in those sectors. This has been agreed with the 'troicka' who monitor the bailout process, so I cannot see how Portugal could not negotiate the same deal.

there is 13% vat on electricity and this remains at 13%.

I suspect that the rate in portugal will be the 13% rate and this will also be applied to our water charges (currently 6%). 23% on services that are essential will be punative especially on the Portuguese themselves.

Joey, that seems to be working because the hotel I always stay in, in Dun Laohghaire seems to have a big increase in bookings and events compared to the same period last year. This is what the staff tell me and they are took on extra staff. Most Irish politicians have experience of working in the private sector so they know what enhances and what damage business.

Increasing levies only deters more business and reduces revenue. The bigger the countries the the more remote government is in helping the private sector.

walking past the citroen showroom in messines, a notice is on the window saying they are shut for 2 weeks for their hols...and I thought cars sales were really down at the moment!!

As the showroom in Messines is part of garage in Portimao I suppose no one has heard of holiday relief or is it that can no one be bothered?
