There's nothing like a big police dog for keeping drunken revellers subdued. Whilst they might give some lip to a policeman, they will treat his dog with the utmost respect. A great deterrent and I see nothing wrong with it. I think you need to chill a bit Joe.

Why 'disgust'? How can the presence of a police dog be disgusting? Was it peeing or pooing or humping someone's leg? That might qualify.

There is a summer campaign in the Algarve to raise the police visibility.
What we have heard is that these teams move around before concentrating on the areas of likely problems such as Albufeira ( strip ) and Praia da Rocha late at night , early hours of the morning.

Thank you emm, Thats all I wanted to know because I have not heard of police patrols in the centre especially with dogs, mind you it's the first time in peak season she has been in the centre.

Whilst my wife was Queuing for a taxi, numerous people asked why police and dogs also quote (it resembled Alburfeira on a Saturday night)!!!!!!!

Taking a side the jokes ( very welcome) most people on this forum must be used to the police patrols with dogs but came as a shock to my wife especially has she says its the loveliest and safest place on earth.

Obviously, the people in the taxi rank have never been to Albufeira on a night in the summer season. To compare it with CVO is like comparing Moss Side in Manchester to Alderley Edge in Cheshire. (Apologies to those from either area, if offended).

A few GNR dog patrols in summer is, I believe, a good thing, in that it shows any undesirables who think about causing a disturbance, that we won't tolerate any bad or rowdy behaviour.

Before moving to Portugal, I lived in a sleepy little hamlet 12 miles outside of York, but on a weekend in summer we had the local bobby walking around the village with his dog and another PC with him. We never thought anything of it, and felt safer in the knowledge that the local plod were keeping us in the safety we were used to living in.
Why anyone would think this to be unusual or feel possibly intimidated by it is beyond me.

Thank God for it, we could have been living in Oslo.

I have just had a horrible thought of the dogs combining in duet with the noises that come out of the Roundup on Karaoke nights.

That would put an end to the tourist trade in Carvoeiro :D :D or maybe not as the dogs will probably sound better.

Yeh but we could look forward to the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band, Three Dog Night and Snoop Dogg, that's if they are still alive and kicking.

There has been a big drug dealing problem in Carvoeiro for some time. I was told the extra Police presence was in an attempt to deal with that and I understand some progress has been made.

We are obviously not the market they are looking for as we have never seen any evidence of dealing or been offered anything.
We spend at least up to 20 weeks in Carvoeiro at various times during the year.
Unlike Albufeira where dealers frequent the strip selling the unwary idiots various concoctions usually looking suspiciously like shoe polish

Lived here for seven years and have never been offered it, but I know it goes on in certain places, and have reported it. I also know several bar owners who have discovered and removed the dealers and called the GNR. The problem is global unfortunately and whilst the GNR know who and where it goes on, catching them in the act or in possession is difficult, many of the road side checks that are on the out road are there to catch the main dealers and suppliers as well as the drunk drivers.

This is the 21st century and nowhere is immune from these low life's, and where people with money are seen, this sort of thing will occur.

All I can say is, if you see it happening or are offered it tell the owner of the bar or, contact the GNR immediately if offered it in the street. Don't do what many have done before and mention it on here and then do nothing. The toe rags will only continue to deal. :x
