Tap water

Not been on a package deal for a couple of years, but the last time we did, the holiday rep going through her list of do's and don'ts on the coach from the airport more or less confirmed what everyone here has said. I remember when they warned you not to drink it in times gone by. The water is safe to drink, but not very pleasant tasting in large quantities. Tooth brushing, washing salad vegetables, etc. is ok. A cup of tea can taste 'different' using tap water - but that also applies when we visit my wife's sister - and she only lives 20 miles away in Frodsham!

I haven't drunk tap water at home for so long now I can't even remember when it was. I do know I have not drank any from the tap in this house, and I've been here 22 years!

But, last night I wanted a glass of water to take with my pills and there wasn't any bottled water to be seen. I thought about wine or whiskey (both within reach) but thought the pills might react so I had a very small glass of lovely Anglian water. I was almost sick! It was foul (and I did run the tap before filling the glass), it tasty fusty and stale and reeked of chlorine or fluoride or whatever they contaminate it with nowadays to make it undrinkable but safe.

It's going to be another 20odd years before I do that again.

In Fethiye, in Turkey, I often drink the tap water (and I decant it into bottles to cool it down in the ice-box), and it tastes like . . . water! No taste, just plain old refreshing water. The sort I used to drink by the gallon as a lad before we all went soft and had to be protected.

Actually, the water here in the north west is considered to be among the best in the country by those in the know. No flouridation yet (although they keep threatening it), so perhaps we should count our blessings.

I was visiting a farm some years back and the farmer's wife offered me coffee. When she brought it in, I sipped it and said "oh you shouldn't have made real coffee, I'd be quite happy with instant" She laughed and told me everybody said the same about her instant coffee. They had they're own bore hole, the water was natural. Funnily I have tried to reproduce this effect at home with bottled water and it doesn't seem to work.

On the subject of coffee - which we weren't - We use Nespresso. They are little metal capsules of real coffee which saty fresh for ever. There are about 20/30 different types available. The Magimix machine cost about £200 but it was worth every penny. I can make myself a cup of real coffee quicker than you can boil a kettle for instant. There is a milk heater on the side to make latte etc.

Can't make proper beer or whiskey without proper water, none of that re-cycled stuff, please !!
