Real Ale in CVO?

JOHN SMITHS!!! a good ale - you want to get early Alzheimers with all the aluminium thats in it its lousy - tasteless and metallic. That, worthington smoothpour and Carling should be taken off the shelves - its just chemical beer.

Of course when I come to CVO I love the local cuisine - The Indian, The Chinese, The Thai and the Pizza place ...mmmm! (only joking lads).

Rampage mate - you and me have got to go into business we will clean up. In the UK there has been a huge growth in micro breweries producing some super ales supplying local pubs for customers CHOICE. They brew dark ales, blonde ales, winter ales, light summer beers, even lager type beers with the one thing that the beers in Spain/Portugal lack in my opinion (and I am entitled to it) - taste.

Obviously real ale doesn't travel well so I am sure if a small craft brewery in the Algarve could produce a range of cask conditioned beers, suitable for chilling in kegs, or bottled supplying the bars to give their customers a CHOICE that would be good for everyone. Nobody is saying you can't have your pint of extract of knat should you so wish but we have all got different tastes.

I choose to come to CVO for my hols and honour you with my presence and some of you think I shouldn't have desires ...oooh missus!
I find it fascinating that many ex pats deride all things from their homeland, but will still watch UK telly, read UK newspapers and conduct this forum in English. Hypocritical? naah.

I happen to agree I think someone could do very well in a venture with a micro brewery in the Algarve. Only the Germans know how to make a proper lager Portuguese lager gets about 4 out of 10 as far as Im concerned. Better leave my white socks at home next time Still like to keep me hanky on me head though

I think an Algarve brewery would be overwhelmed with demand I can think of at least 10 places where we have done business in CVO and they would certainly be interested...then all the other towns it could be a huge success..I would focus on the Ales rather than lager

What's so great about going native? Portugal's not known for its great cuisine & there's a reason for that - it's not great! If you really want to go native come out into the sticks & stop eating in the tourist restaurants in Carvoeiro. Personally I like a mix of international food, even for 2 weeks eating the same old, same old gets very boring. I don't like portuguese tonic in my vodka, I prefer Shweppes is that also not allowed? I also know that a lot of the restaurants favoured by some of the forum members who always feel the need to put people down for wanting a touch of home have non-Portuguese chefs & international menus. Live & let live.

Well I like piri-piri, steak "portuguese" style, fresh fish bar-b-qued, superbock, sunshine, eating outside everyday etc - all the things I can't get at home. I also like all these things next to the sea - not in a shack in the hills!! If you are bored with it, come back to Blighty!

we too prefer schweppes - at home. but in the algarve we prefer nordic. almost impossible to get in most bars and restaurants. as for intermarche - forget it. when we see it in continente we stock up. in our opinion just tastes nicer, and you definitely can't get it at home. everyone has their own views on what tastes good and what tastes awful. carlsberg are world famous for their 'probably' adds but in my opinion the carlsberg brewed in england under licence is close to p**s, probably the worst lager in the world. no comparison with carlsberg on offer elsewhere. superbock can taste really good on a really warm summer day but would it sell in ireland or uk in a pub in in the winter. not really good enough so probably not. just my opinion before anyone shoots me.

No guns in sight Joey - but the above is the crux of the matter (beer-wise) - the cold beers we drink in the Algarve suit the temperature and ambience for the holidaymaker - if someone tried to get real ale down there I just don't see how they will do it. It has to be kept in a cool environment - actually cooler than lager - because unlike the local beers chilling it on the way out does not work. It would soon go off in the warm climate - I suppose a chiller-room may work but transportation would still ruin the beer.
