Portugal Now has a New Government.

Post by EMM »

Portugal now has a centre right goverment which with the support of other rightwing parties will be able to force through the policy of cuts and additional taxes.
We should not be surprised to see the Tolls activated.
The markets like it .the Euro has gained gainst both the dollar and sterling.
It is also thought that Portugal will not see the strikes and disruption as seen in Greece or recently in Spain.

The new coalitions big problem will be how to get growth in the economy. There is virtually no export industry of any real consequence apart from tourism and tolls on the A22 will not help that at all
Without the ability to devalue their currency the only way to generate foreign investment is to reduce labour costs and that could bring people onto the streets if implemented. The prospect of big cuts in social expenditure, higher taxes and reduced incomes will eventually come to a head once the initial honeymoon period is over for this new government. Tough times ahead :(

The concern is the FX rate for brits sending funds over to pay the portuguese workers and also rising euribor rates.
