Licy - I believe the soil in Portugal is generally acidic. Depending on what you want to grow you can reduce the acidity by adding lime - particularly if you are planning on growing vegtables.

I want lots of lovely shrubs that don't loose their leaves, have a wonderful scent and great flowers, plus don't want much tending too and can forget about an irrigation system. tall order. thanks. LICY :)

Yes! a tall order indeed, I feel you should buy plastic plants and spray them regularly with a room freshener, that with a quick hose down every now and then should suffice. By the way LICY when in the name of god are you moving into this new villa?

Late summer/autumn HOPEFULLY. so when will you be doing some digging for those. Wonderful plastic plants? I might even give you a beer. Whilst you are digging. I need some ideas how to plan for my plastic plants too. LICY

No doubt imnproved by the incredible amounbt of rain we have had in the past few days we have numerous shrubs and flowers in bloom.
Honeysuckle, fresias, gladiolas, roses. lavender, and many others.

I suggest that you visit the variuous local garden centres and see what is in bloom during your visits and plan accordingly.

thanks that sounds sensible. I am surprised there are so many flowering shrubs that do not need much water save for getting them established. not being a gardener I have no idea what time is needed for shrubs to become established. We need lots of ground cover/trailing plants due to the immense slope to the plot. we will need to get a landscaper/ gardener to help us at first, although funding very tight. LICY

As you say you have quite a slope I would suggest that you do get a local professional to have a look at it.
Given the monsoon type rain we now seem to get you could find your garden either in the road or in your lounge if you do not have the right type of drainage installed.
Also as we found out the Camara are not quite picky about water from gardens being allowed to drain freely onto the road.
