Palm tree removal

Post by roy4eyes »

Our tree was beyond redemption (30 years old) when it had a visit from the red beetles and their horrible larvae and we had no choice but to remove it.
Opinions from 4 Portuguese tree men was that we had 2 options - leave it for 12 - 18 months to dry out and cut it down or have it removed by crane and digger now for €500 of which € 200 was for dumping it at the Lagoa waste disposal site.
Fortunately a friend mentioned an English tree surgeon, Ken, from Paderne who quoted a price of € 150 for cutting it now.
He duly turned up, cut it up, disposed of it in a day and a half, left the garden nice and tidy and a bill for € 150.
I cannot recommend him too highly and anyone with a similar problem is welcome to contact me for his details.

Down to about 10 cms. below patio level so we can lay new paving. The roots are multitudinous fibres - not like the roots of a conventional tree which are large and often have a central main root. We are assured that they will simply rot away in time.

Hi Alf

I have sent PM.

Hi Pickwick
The roots are like a lattice work mixed with compacted earth so I don't think they will collapse, but as a belt and braces approach I will prepare a layer of reinforced concrete and lay tiles on top of that.
A bigger problem may be trying to grow anything in the root area, hence our decision to tile over.

I had a palm cut down 2 years ago to show about 2 inches above ground. There is now some crumbling around the perimeter of the stump but otherwise the centre is still pretty solid and strong.

We had one removed a number of years ago. Tiled over - no subsidence yet.
