DD is fine but make sure you always have the funds to pay on the dot. If you don't the DD is rejected and they don't try a second time with the result that you get fined

Tell your bank to put a max payment on the water bill - say €200 - to stop them taking huge bills when there is a meter problem or a leak. Even if the leak is their problem you will never get the money back.

Re: Water Bills
A friend of ours went to pay her bill....but the queues were so long they couldn't pay.....so she asked at the desk, if she would still be fined.
The answer was YES....so my friend pointed out that she wanted to pay her bill but they wouldnt take her money, but she would still be fined.............? Yes!
As she wryly pointed out....the joys of living in Portugal....no wonder the country is nearly bankrupt. It is choking on illogical, inefficient bureaucracy.

Re: Water Bills
rules must have changed for new owners: you definitely have to have a dd or they will simply disconnect. not alone do you have to have a dd it has to be with a 'local' bank (now that is burocracy gone mad and I suspect contravenes eu rules)one of our neighbours had her water disconnected because her dd was not deemed satisfactory ie not in either cvo or lagoa. when she enquired she was informed that a branch in any town outside cvo/lagoa was unacceptable.
the developer of our apt had the water connected but we still had to go to the camera to set up a dd, the very pleasant young lady in the camera said that she couldn't take the first money due and that it had to be paid in the post office.
re the bouncing of a dd for insufficient funds: when we opened an account in barclays the manager added €500 to our account in case we required it. I regulary check on line and the actual balance is clearly shown as is the amount 'available' ie €500 greater. have not drawn on it as I suspect the interest is quite high but nevertheless happy enough to know it's there if required.
