Re: A22 PROTEST
I can only go by past examples. In London, candidate for Mayor, Boris Johnson promised that if he was elected he would abolish the Congestion Charge for the Western extension of London. What did he do? He got elected and abolished the extension charge, London is London and the Algarve is the Algarve; different areas but the same principles apply: you get elected and re-elected if you keep a promise especially when getting rid of an unfair tax.Bruce Wallis wrote:I can tell you aren't a politician James.
The current political masters take the blame.....
The incomers criticise the outgoers.....but do nothing, except collect the new revenue stream.
I dont actually mind a toll.....what I object to is the way they are going to attempt to administer it.
It would make more sense to have a toll booth on the entry slips, and just collect an averaged out fixed charge.

Hey , hazyblazer, I am not superior in any way !! Elite is just my companies name ! you see, I dont need to hide behind some silly name.....
The only thing I try to do is to keep people up to date about an issue that concern many of us here in the Algarve....
Anyway, you just made your point that complaining on your lazy arse behind your computer just might wet your sho--slippers..

I have to say I can see all the RHD Mercs and BMWs going down a storm at this protest. What are you protesting against exactly? The toll itself, the haphazard way it seems it will be implemented or the increased hazards on the N125.elite wrote:agree with you lazyblazer, probably won´t do any good but I rather piss on my shoes than sitting all day in front of the computer and complain about everything and everybody with out lifting my arse..sorry.
I've been sat on my lazy arse in front of my computer complaining to the the MEPs on the tourist committee about the latter two issues. Seems that also leads to wet shoes.
No HR, I just took offence at this rude person.Hey , hazyblazer, I am not superior in any way !! Elite is just my companies name ! you see, I dont need to hide behind some silly name.....

Re: A22 PROTEST
Sorry I'm with elite on this one. The protest was announced on facebook and the message was simply being passed on to those interested. As they say, if you've got nothing nice to say...

Re: A22 PROTEST
All I said was that the protest was futile, the toll road will go ahead regardless. I didn't think the tone of Dirk Vuijk's response was called for. Portugal needs to raise revenue and the motorist is the obvious target. My concern is how they intend to get revenue from the high proportion of A22 users who are tourists or part-time residents. That's why I have been trying to get some action from the EEC, so that they are at least aware of what's going on with the road that they funded.

and I think you'll find that the 'high proportion' of A22 users are residents and Algarve businesses whose lives and prosperity will be severely affected by all this, fair play if they want to go out and protest about it.

You're right, I was bringing myself down to the level of those corrupting my usename. I've edited it.being rude about somebody's name demeans any point you're trying to make LB,
I'm just wondering who will be at this protest. The Portuguese or the ex-Pats?
Re: A22 PROTEST
These tolls will affect everyone! Whether directly or indirectly, tourist, resident or local....airport transfers & taxis will increase their rates, all transport companies will increase their rates....so there will be a serrious knock on effect. The cost of living here has increased drastically, and this is just another nail in the coffin!
That is why everyone envolved is spreading the word. For those of us who live here it is a serious concern, that is not taken lightly!

Re: A22 PROTEST
Apologies to you LB, I didn't quite pick up that Dirk had been silly with your username before; this whole thing is an emotive subject, it's affecting lots of people in all sorts of ways; Lagoa and Portimao believe it or not have significant rush hour's both mornings & evenings, people come from all over; add on the queues to get to the International School & the traffic from Porches to Alvor will get horrendous; local residents won't pay 50 cents to park for an hour in a bay so there's little chance they'll pay to ride the A22; staff at our local golf club haven't had a pay rise in 5 years so lots of folks simply don't have the spare cash.laserblazer wrote:You're right, I was bringing myself down to the level of those corrupting my usename. I'll be paying the tolls when they come, as Aitch says on the other A22 topic the rates don't seem that bad; but I fully endorse the efforts by the locals to organise a protest to get their voices heard.

Re: A22 PROTEST
What is more upsetting for those who are residents and for businesses is the heavy-handed way it has been introduced. It has been " bashed on the head" without any consultation and just implemented. For such a policy that affects so many people you would think that a referendum would have been introduced or it was part of a party's manifesto to have a mandate to introduce such a scheme. On either counts there would have been a BIG no or huge electoral losses for such a scheme,bife73 wrote:These tolls will affect everyone! While it is admirable and to be applauded that people will go out of their way to demonstrate against such an unfair policy the arrogance of those who implement it means they will arrogantly ignore the well-justified anger.
The toll charges may be low but that is just a sweetener. If this scheme stays permanent the toll charges will rise.

No, ditzy, I'm a 50/50 resident.ditzy wrote:Bruce I don't mean to sound derogatory, but do you live here full time? I know you say you don't mind the tolls, but many here are not only disconcerted with how it will be implemented, as are you, but who also worry about all the negative implications it will bring with it in terms of tourism (the Spanish and Northern Portuguese in particular) and so on. And as many have said already, driving to the airport will no doubt be fun and games...
I think we need to accept that toll roads are a growing reality throughout Europe. It cost me 26 euros to drive down from the Spanish border on the A2 last week. The citizens of europe are very familiar with toll roads, and there is no evidence to suggest that major tourist areas get less visitors because of toll roads.
To my mind the problem is one of fair and practical implementation, and whether there is a road safety issue because of the probable increase in traffic levels on the N125.
That is the issue to pin the politicians with.
