Your advice, please?! Car search....

Hello, folks

I am looking to buy a Fiat Barchetta, a decent one, to be a nice little machine to stay and live with us in Carvoeriro - but I'm afraid I have no experience of buying / registering a car in Portugal.

I would be really grateful if anyone who has the knowledge/experience of car purchase/registration in Portugal could help me here - (I also have no idea where to obtain a Barchetta! Any suggestions?) - If you can help me, the dinner's definately on me!

I have no experience in either importing a car to Portugal or buying there. However, as the car was only ever made in LHD, I think you should consider both. This is always a good place to start for UK cars http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.a ... =&nodays=0 .

From the little knowledge on the subject I understand that buying a car in the UK and keeping it for a year here before exporting will be the cheapest option by far as it avoids local taxes.

I would be looking to buy a local (i.e a Portugal-registered) Fiat Barchetta, and therefore try to avoid all of the registration nonsense...any help would be appreciated...together with any suggestions as to where I could buy a decent one!!

The Barchetta is a pretty rare car here in the Algarve, and I think you will be lucky to find a good one. You could try Motrix at Guia, who deal in specialist cars. They may be able to find one for you, but if that is what you really want, I suggest you try some of the specialist sports car dealers around Lisbon.

How funny, saw a Fiat Barchetta only yesterday in the car sales in Alcantarilha !! just opposite the large Viera garage, its a 2000 model, Black in colour, Portuguese Reg and up at € 9,800. Don't know the car sales company at all, so can't vouch for them, was just that we were with a friend who liked the look of the Barchetta, but it was out of his price range. Others on here might know if they are a good company or not.

To register a vehicle here you will need a Portuguese address and Fiscal Number, if you buy from a dealer they should deal with the registration for you.

Aitch - thanks for your advice....

Lulu - thank you VERY much - this sounds good to me - (black Barchetta is good!)...but it's a bit more than I was wanting to spend...considering it's going to spend most of its time, sitting on its wheels in an underground car-park in CVO - (but just think how surprised my girl would be, when we turn up at our apartment , and she says, "Someone's parked in our space"!

Do you know anyone who could check it out for me, and do a bit of "negotiating"...I would be happy to pay them for their time/expertise, assuming they thought it was a 'worthwhile vehicle''?

(I am in the Isle of Man at the moment, so a visit to CVO is not on the cards until early June, but as said, maybe you might know someone who might be able to help me in this matter...

If not, I understand, and either way, I thank you very much for your help..
