Recommendation for best basic Freesat Box

Having established from experience sky have now cut their freesat programmes to a minimum, what is the best Freesat box to buy in the UK or Portugal. I believe at this moment in time the Freesat box gives you a lot more programmes than the sky.

In fact there is no real difference between using a skybox just for freesat or a standard freesat box - both use the Astra 28 satellite. I have both in my CVO house and with the latest Sky card I cna get several more channels that on the freesat box - alhtough I have not yet tried to "add" channels onto the freesat.

The freesat system is more simple as it only displays the available channels and it is in an easy-to-see format. However the freesat reception seems to suffer more than when using the sky receiver - a friend in CVO recently tried a freesat box and he couldnt get all of the channels that he was gettting with his sky box - maybe the freesat unit needs a stronger signal?

In Portugal, a second hand sky box (€25-40) is generally cheaper than a second hand freesat box (€40-50). In UK, The cheapest units are the Bush/Grundig ones, which can be bought from lots of places for ~£60

The best Free Sat Box I have had is a Humax HD delivered here from Amazon. However the number of Channels available is compatible with Sky, although you do get a few extra ones. Great reception and superb Picture Quality. Have a look at the Freesat web page and see what you can receive.

does the latest sky HD box with freesat work in Portugal cos your supposed to get the top 5 channels free in HD and 320 other channels. Also do the sky+ pause feature still work? I don't know how I can ever live without that feature! Sorry if I'm repeating questions asked over and over.

Basically YES, BUT you have to have twin outputs from your dish and you MUST have a registered Sky+ box and card - AT A UK ADDRESS! There is also the problem that you need a phone line connected for the first 12 mths of any new subscription at a uk address. If you have an exisiting 12 mth old SKY + system in UK, bring it over and it should work fine

The Humax box is great, watch in hd and can record the same time, well worth the price, got ours in Argos and brought it over last summer so no doubt there is an even better one now.
