Help please finding driving routes from Calais to Carvoeiro

Post by gabby27 »

sorry if I should have posted this under Motoring but do any of you wise folk know where I can find a route from Calais (or any port coming from UK). We are happy to take our time (4 nights) as would prefer to avoid tolls and even more nervous about ending up on a SCUT motorway in an english reg car.
Any help would be warmly welcomed.
Thankyou

Log on to Google Maps driving directions - you can select no-toll routes from there.

That post is over 5 years old and from my experience last year I can tell you one thing - that the motel Picon del Conde is no longer modern and I wouldn't recommend it personally. There is a big hotel just down the road which is very nice although more expensive.

Gabby last year I followed the route from Calais / Rouen / Le Mans / Bordeaux / Bayonne / through the Pyrenees by the Atlantic / Burgos / Salamanca / into Portugal above Lisbon and then straight down the new motorways to finally pick up the A22 in the Algarve. The tolls came to just over 100 Euros but you can avoid the Portuguese tolls by driving from Burgos down through Spain to Seville and pick up the A22 from there - saving almost 30 Euros but costing a bit more in fuel. Of course , as reported elsewhere on the forum , the A22 will have tolls from April and other tolls may have increased this year.
I used Google maps to avoid tolls where possible but sometimes the extra time or mileage taken is just not worth it .
One thing i would say is that Google tends to over-elaborate the instructions with too much detail which can cause confusion so if I did it again I would certainly invest in a Sat Nav.
If possible take a diesel vehicle as the saving over petrol is substantial

hi Gabby,

Michelin have a nice route planner, I put in Calais to Carvoeiro & clicked more options to select avoid tolls

http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Itinerai ... eConso=5.6

they can also suggest places to stay along the way

I've done this drive a few times, it's a long way so whilst avoiding motorway tolls might be a good idea it only saves about €120, worth paying in my book; some people do the run on a one night stop, I tried that once & won't be doing it again! 2 is good, stopping near Bordeaux, then beautiful Salamanca.

the golden rule is not to do the drive in August, day or night, it scars you for life
