Happy Independence Day to all our American Members & Guests!

On a recent 'Discovery' programme on TV they were discussing this most important..significant event in U.S history......
a question asked by interviewer to an American chap was;
'what do you think life would be like now if America was still part of the United Kingdom?'
The man answered:
For a start we'd have better health system...
Unarmed Policemen.....
A fairer voting system...seat of government styled on the house of Parliament...
This was just one ordinary Americans thoughts...but how many others would see it that way?
P.S. If it was so..would 'tea' now be your national drink?
Or is that too sore a subject?

Yes I am with you Ellie, Happy 4th to all our American friends. We lived in New Hampshire for four years, from 85/89, loved it, liked the people we met both Americans and English who were living out there, we made some very good friends who we still keep in touch with and get to visit when we can.
I loved the American way of life, mind you we were out in the sticks, but I loved every minute of our time there.

There's something I just don't get, if the USA is such a bad awful place to live then why in the heck are so many people banging on our doors to get in.

I just thought when I posted this topic it would be a bit of light-hearted fun..the programme I quoted was from America...and the answers from an American.....
its only a 'what might have been' subject....
like a play on our TV tonight about what 'Might have happened' if the Nazis had conquered England...thats all
I wasnt knocking the U.S......I am quite a champion of its people....
after all..this country wouldnt be as it is today if it hadnt been for America and its part in ww2...
cant we keep this lighter.....please?

Just spotted SHOWWWYS post!......they used to say the streets of London were paved with gold ......
is that why so many yanks(affectionate term) are coming to live 'here!'

Thanks for the boost on our 4th of July Ellie. We sure need all the good will we can get, as of late we have been getting kicked around quite a bit as you well know.

P.S. Ellie...sorry to say I have no connection with gold mining, the only gold I have are in my teeth. My response to SHOWWWY was only a feeble attempt to use an analogy.

The U.S. is a free, democratic and open society. Citizens from around the world are welcome to visit, study, and do business in our country however, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there have been changes in US immigration laws. These changes were made to assist our government to better control visitor entry and exit.

The United States Government made a promise to protect the safety of our country's citizens while balancing healthy tourist and legal immigrant policies. Our government will now require additional application forms and security clearances. Visa applications may take longer to process. Immediately after the changes, many applicants experienced delays in processing of their visas. Recently it seems as if there have been improvements in processing visa clearances.

The Two Types of Visa Classification:

* Classification: Nonimmigrant Visas

Temporary in their nature, nonimmigrant visas apply to those who want to enter the USA for a specific yet temporary purpose such as a visit, study or work.

* Classification: Immigrant Visas

Those who successfully apply and are granted an immigrant visa are provided with permanent residency status and are issued a "Green Card"

Which Classification is Right For Me?

When considering traveling to the USA, you should first pick the visa classification that best fits the purpose of your travel. For example; if you will be visiting the USA, then a temporary visitors visa would be your choice. Since temporary is regarded as nonimmigrant, you would select the nonimmigrant visa classification. If you are the spouse of a US Citizen, and you are moving to the USA to unite with your US Citizen husband or wife, then your intentions will be to stay indefinitely in the USA. The Immigrant Visa classification would be the more suited one for this purpose since the nature of your intentions are permanent and not temporary.

Each of the above classifications contains rigid visa categories. For each category there are specific eligibility requirements. The system will work best for you if you can figure out whether you qualify for the any of the eligibility requirements listed under a specific visa category.

Your first step is to identify the visa classification you will be pursuing, i.e.; Immigrant or Nonimmigrant. Once you identified the classification of the visa, you need to identify the category which will be most suited to your needs.
