Dogs!!

Post by scallywag15 »

Having just spent three weeks in Carvoeiro, we would just like to know why so many stray dogs are allowed to roam the streets, barking incessantly day & night and fouling the footpaths without anything being done about them? We found it necessary to walk around with eyes glued to the footpaths so we didn't tread in anything! We'd hate to bring children to Carvoeiro as they never look where they walk. Carvoeiro is a lovely town but we will certainly think twice before coming again unless something is done to clean the place up. :(

Have you ever been to france, its even worse, We once went skiing to one of their purpose built resorts and in the town there was more dog poop than snow.
You are right though coming from the UK where owners now clear up after there dogs it does com as a surprise.
As for barking dogs, its part of life in Portugal , you soon get used to it.

Barking dogs, yes. However, must admit I am always astonished at how LITTLE cr4p there is in public places bearing in mind the number of dogs around. In five years I haven't come into direct contact with any and neither have my family. Do the street cleaners only work in the summer months?

Haven't experienced it in France but went to a lovely town in Spain just south of Barcelona several years ago with the same problem. Went back in October and it had been transformed - no poop! :)

It's not just the stray dogs, that's actually a problem that has improved over the years & a lot of the dogs you see aren't strays they've been turned out for the day when their owners go to work, it's also the fact that unfortunately many of the dog owners don't believe in clearing up after their own animals & have never heard of poop scooping.
We were on a beach last summer & a middle aged German man brought his dog down onto the beach, which is prohibited on the leisure beaches once the season has started, the dog did an enormous poo watched by his owner the owner then turned round & left the beach with his dog leaving the mess behind him without any concern at all. Fortunately the parents in one family group complained to the lifeguard who chased after the man & remonstrated with him however it was the lifeguard who came back & cleared up the mess.

Watch this space. When the cuts start digging in here and the dog wardens are sacked and owners can't afford to feed their pitballs (sorry staffies) we'll soon have semi-feral packs roaming the streets and their cr@p will be the least of the problems.

I have never been a fan of Paris due to this problem - every mornng the owners in the blocks of flats send out their little crappers to do their mess - and leave it. The paris city council send out the water trucks at 12 every night to wash the pavements and flush it all down the drains - and people say the Seine is beautiful!!

Judging by the evidence left overnight , we think that its not stray dogs but elephants who are guilty of the mess.

So how come the problem is worse now than in the summer?
Or is it the volume of people treading it into the pavement in the summer that makes it seem less of a problem?

I do not think it is any worse as you say there is just less foot traffic.

I think the dogs stay at home in the shade and sleep throught the heat of day, conserving their energies for barking all through the night.

Fair comment on the observation of dog poo from a newbie and bringing it to the attention of the CVO forum. Whether you are in France (agree, it's piled high with dog poo) Spain or Portugal, it is a problem which we have also noticed. Not sure if it's getting worse but must admit have had to dodge the poo on many occasions outside our apartment.
