Supermarkets - what time are they open to?

Hi - I'm visiting Portugal in a couple of weeks and fly in to Faro on saturday night. I'll be in CVO quite late (prob after 11pm) - are there any supermarkets open at that time so I can pick up some bits and pieces - eg water, milk, bread etc...? If not, is there a shop at the airport or close by?

I wouldn't want to rely on the supermarkets being open, can you ask for a welcome pack in your accommodation?

kteee if you are staying at a complex or through an agent then a welcome pack is great, but if like us we come out to our own place, and the flights are always late at night, where can we pick up those essential breakfast things to save having to get up early on the first morning of the holiday to go supermarket shopping? Are there any places open that would sell milk, bread, juice etc. between the Airport and cvo? would be reallly grateful for your help.

As mentioned on a previous thread, continente at algarve shopping stays open until 11 or midnight most nights - I'll check next time I go if anyone is interested.

Maybe I should set up a welcome pack service for forum members!

ps, as it is your place can you not leave some cartons of juice and long life milk in the house and some bread in the freezer when you leave - just a thought!

not sure if the actual supermarket is open as late as the other shops. If If it was me I'd pack a couple of bottles of drinking water in my case, go out for breakfast the next morning, then go shopping for essientals later. Relax you're on holiday

Thanks everyone for your input, kteee, I think you should go into the forum members welcome pack business, might be just the thing.
We do leave water in the kitchen but as we only get out to our place once a month, and then for only three or four days at a time, we don't leave the fridge/freezer switched on. I think I am just being lazy really, it is just so nice on the first morning to sit outside with a cup of tea (thats why I like fresh milk, the long life stuff doesn't taste nice in tea) and some toast, enjoy the quiet and the sun and relax, before thinking about getting dressed and takling the supermarkets. I will get some juice in cartons though, hadn't thought of that, always go for the fresh juice.
Mind you when we have our 'gin and tonic' orchard up and running, it will be fresh juice from the tree! Can't wait!!

Cant help with the milk Lesley ( I agree the long life stuff is yuck )
But I always throw a pack of those half baked rolls into my suitcase so at least we have warm bread and coffee the next morning.Never go anywhere without "coffee mate" just incase

The petrol station going east at Lagoa carries a good range of odds and sods including milk. Failing that how about popping into one of the bars and scroungeing some from them.

Guest, that sounds a good idea, only problem is we probably wouldn't get up the next morning for the breakfast, who can just pop into a bar in cvo without embibing!! Still will be taking some half baked rolls, and hopefully grab some juice at the petrol station at the airport so hope fully we will have breakfast!

Hi Sandy, yes I will, the first priority when we were looking for a place in Portugal was that it had to have enough land for a 'Gin and Tonic orchard' Hubby's stipulation! I'd prefer a nice Pimms, but the same trees work for both!! So Orange, Lemon and Lime trees will be the first things to be planted this autumn.
Are you alcohol free? I lived in Lyibia for a couple of years way back in 1970 and that was 'dry'. Not that I am an alcoholic, just like a drink or two!!

No we're not dry here - bars and licenced restaurants and a healthy allowance on our booze licence - gin only £3 a bottle too! Muscat's very nice - I don't envy you your time in Libya. We've been here for 13 years now - I can barely believe it myself. Can't wait till the time we eventually come to live in CVO permanently too though.

Hi Sandy, Libya was not much fun but it was ages ago now, but we got by making our own 'moonshine'
I expect you are looking forward to a cooler environment! will you be ending up in cvo then? That will be a huge change from Muscat! Where as we are looking for a warmer climate, we have the house, but until my youngest daughter has finished Uni and got herself some sort of a career, I can't see us moving out permanently to cvo, but would like to be doing a couple of months there and a couple back in UK in the next couple of years.
