I was recently hit by a truck coming towards me on the wrong side of a mountain road near Monchique. Fault 100% his.
He drove off without stopping but I got his matriculation/reg number. The police haven’t been able to trace the truck, so either I got a couple of the letters wrong or it was a false plate, therefore the probability of finding him is apparently very low and I was advised to start looking for him myself (which I am trying to make the time for, without a car).
My insurance won’t pay.
The damage to my car is several thousand euros and is about the figure I paid for it, just 3 months ago. I spent months saving for it.
What really gets me, as the innocent victim of a crime, is the resigned/ defeatist attitude towards getting justice done.

You have my sympathy for your loss but if, as you stated, you have the wrong registration number, who are you holding responsible for the absence of justice? What is it you are expecting the authorities to do - set up road blocks across the region/country to find a truck with some damage to it's bumper? That probably takes in 75%+ of Portuguese trucks!

I can't imagine any UK police force taking too much time to find a truck with a number that could be any one from 1000's - I can't see the Portuguese doing so either.

Do you or am I missing the point?

It s not just in Portugal, figures indicate that up to 25% of the cars on the roads in the UK are without , MOT, TAX or insurance, one or all of these.
This is why UK vehicle insurance is so high.

My thoughts - any one not having fully comp is leaving themselves open to to this. It is a gamble that is rarely worth the risk.

Thanks Fmm for your concern. No, I didn't have comprehensive, but it's just wrong that some oncoming traffic can cross to my side of the road and slam into the front of my car and I have to cover the loss/cost/inconvenience/time, when they cruise off scott free.
