well let me tell you a little story...a portugese friend married to an englishwoman decided to leave the uk after many years but before moving went along to the portuguse embassy in london..he asked whether his new uk driving licence was in order......but of course they said ..you have the latest one...... no problem.
so he come back to the algarve and gets pulled over by the gnr....he shows them his "new EU licence"....whats this they ask..he explainns with grit and deteminatiion like td suggests what the embassy has said.....
result....he spends the night in jail..as the local gnr have never heard of such licences.
i could you example after example and its nothing to do with whether one is english or not...i have heard many portuguese under their breath (because they are still afraid) how these officials are "stupid"
but hey come on TD who are we to argue against your wealth of knowledge and experience.

Spot on - your assessment of me is frighteningly accurate - I have a can do attitide because most things can be done if approached properly and with the right attitude.
Apologies for the philosophy lecture. so back to the main issue.
The prospect of living and working amongst the most insincere, shallow and gullible race on the planet is something I can live without.
In Portugal what you see is what you get - sincere and lovely people and a great place to be. Two basic attributes that America aspires to but, in my opinion, will never achieve.

Much as I admire your supreme confidence and your 'get up and go' attitude and i salute your success in business.......
you cant generalise about a nation like that...
and until youve tried it (running a business in Portugal) you have no idea what youre gonna come up against........much as I love the Portuguese..youre gonna meet shallow/insincere folk there also!
but I think youve come amongst us here to do a 'wind up 'job yeah?deliberately antagonising?
Youre trying to get us all going..right?

I am aware of the numerous obstacles littering the path to establishing and running a business in Portugal. The point I am trying to make, which clearly I am not getting across, is that the system is there to be 'used' or 'abused' - take your choice.
I set up in a business partnership there 6 years ago and while we encountered all manner of obstacles we took the view that we will never beat the system so we found a way to work within it. It was costly, time consuming and downright frustrating but that's the way they do things - so we conformed.
When I first answered this post I was 'hoping' that somebody had found a way to deal with the bureaucrats and bureaucracy but they haven't - yet!

Well Td, with your laid back ,unbiased and open minded approach to people you are certain to succeed - (you might not make very many friends in the process however) As you are so dogmatic, I find portugal a suprising choice of country to settle in and would be interested to know
what appeals to you. And insulting other members of the forum will not get you the answers you have been looking for.

Hi td..i pressume its not a p.r biz that your setting up...are you irish....i have to agree with most of what you say here but what kind of info are you working with...nobody has yet used the word impossible ..what they seem to be telling you is that the amount of effort required doesn,t return a worthwhile reward also your only being exposed to the negative side as presumably your aware of the plusess ..anyway what ever the biz im sure most of the posters on here will join with me in wishing you sincerest best wishes on the success of your venture.

Do they (Irish) have perhaps..some protection from 'the little people' that somehow makes them more sure of success than other folk
?
and td if youve already had experience of success in Portugal and youve overcome those'obstacles' why d'you need to know anything....

Once upon a time, on a farm in TEXAS, there was a little red hen who scratched about the barnyard until she uncovered quite a few grains of wheat.

And they all painted "Unfair!" picket signs and marched around and around the little red hen, shouting obscenities.
Then a government agent came, he said to the little red hen, "You must not be so greedy."
"But I earned the bread," said the little red hen.
"Exactly," said the agent. "That is what makes our free enterprise system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants. But under our modern government regulations, the productive workers must divide the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy and idle."
And they all lived happily ever after, including the little red hen, who smiled and clucked, "I am grateful, for now I truly understand." But her neighbors became quite disappointed in her.. She never again baked bread because she joined the "party" and got her bread free.
And all the liberals smiled. 'Fairness' had been established. Individual initiative had died but nobody noticed; perhaps no one cared, as long as there was free bread.
