Post by martin »

I notice in this weeks Resident the following (see below) that 100000 restaurants have closed down in Portugal last year

see here

http://www.algarveresident.com/story.asp?XID=39174

BUT then in this weeks "News" it tell us that according to the Bank of Portugal tourism has never had it so good!!
can someone please explain ????:

part report here from the "news".............

"Tourism profits soar
4/12/2010

Incredible as it may seem the tourism industry is this year well on its way to reporting the best year on record in terms of revenue. Amid the economic crisis, the Bank of Portugal has this week revealed that the tourism industry was responsible for generating revenue of almost six billion euros in the first nine months of the year, well above numbers registered in 2009 or even 2008, which was considered the best year ever for tourism in Portugal. But despite these positive figures, some golf courses and hotels expressed surprise, saying numbers have either stagnated or suffered a slight decline.

Possibly more people are going for self-catering holidays. The bigger rental villas seem to be thriving, so I guess large family groups are going out and partying in the back garden.

Martin do you actually mean ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND, that is one restaraunt for every 110 people.
Just a bit of over suppy, 10,000 = 1 for every 1100 people .
Still sounds innacurate.

Not for the first time it looks lke the Resident has got its facts wrong.

Overall from observation I think this summmer was busier than last but that the annual figures will not reflect real growth.
Golf courses were certainly busier in Sept/Oct.
