Emm,what i dont understand is why is the car illegal,i cannot see your reasoning here,its not illegal to have a british car here in Portugal,im very well aware of the restrictions imposed illegally by the Portugese government regarding Foreign plated cars being allowed to be in Portugal for six months,but why does that make the car itself illegal?

Portugal is the only country in Europe who are members of the "common Market"where you are not allowed to drive your car freely,surely that should tell you something,Portugal as a nation gets fined every single year for breaking the European union laws because the fines they hand out are far in excess of the fines they receive,why the European parliment do not put a stop to this i just cannot understand,probably because there getting there revenue from Portugal on an annual basis,lets be honest its legalised extortion.

Portugal and ESPECIALLY the Algarve region should put there hands together and thank God for the foreign investment in this lovely country,otherwise without us Estangerios what would the Algarve be,you tell me.

We all chose to live full or part time in Portugal and as such whether we like it or not have to accept the law of the land.

The GNR will fine you or in extremise impound your illegal overstayed, UK car, quoting EU law is a total waste of time.
If you exceed 183 days your UK reg car is illegal in Portugal that is the law.

Yes the EU fines Portugal but the fine is a fraction of the tax income and as such is meaningless.

The law may be an arse but there is little you or I can do about it.

EU fines are " meaningless " to the Portuguese government and its of so little importance to the EU that they are more than happy to let the infringements continue.

EU LAW, not Portuguese, states that any EU resident of a member state MUST register their vehicle in the country of residence if that vehicle will be kept there for more than 183 days. It also states that the owner of said vehicle cannot drive a foreign registered vehicle in their resident country. i.e. UK plated in any other EU state. Similarly, a non UK plated car in the UK if you become resident in the UK.
