I went to the cork factory but didnt get the same smell at all - back home now so will have to reinvestigate when we are back out in 4 weeks.

The doughnut factory (wherever it is)/early morning cooking has a definite ring to it (pun intended!) :D

This is a strange phenomenon - the aroma disappears around mid-morning(10.30am). I need an early morning call tomorrow to get to the airport - hopefully it will return around 6.00am :D

I smelt this some mornings when having breakfast on the balcony. We visited friends in Spain last week, and smelt a similar smell, but much stronger, in the early evening there. They cannot work it out either. They have a house half way up the side of a valley. There are a lot of orange trees in the valley, and the farmers were having bonfires, with what seemed to be prunings/branches of the orange trees. We suspect the smell was coming from these. Not noticed anything similar in CVO, has anyone else?

I can think that orange tree branches may give a sweet smell when burning, but who gets up at 4 am to light the bonfire??? :?

Are we all ignoring the obvious, is it part of process designed to reduce a more offensive smell from the new water treatment plant ??.

Monte Santo should do something about theirs, the smell in their immediate area can be really bad sometimes.

interesting one - I have looked at the new plant and dont recall seeing a chimney or air outlet pipe anywhere - anyone taken a closer look?

As this was built with EC cash I assumed it was built to EU specs and these say you cannot have emissions of greater than (I believe) 5 mg/m3 in any exhaust - and as I havent seen the exhaust either.......

I'm still with the early morning bakery suggestion - did anyone investigate if this fabled doughnut factory was still there? that would be in the same area as the water treatment plant as well! Curiouser and curiouser....

There is nothing else in the area of the treatment plant.

Hi All

Think it might be the Carob tree - see below??

"The tree that comes to mind for me, especially at this time of year, is the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua). It is especially pungent on cool evenings and mornings and during dry spells. A mature carob tree will 'scent' the entire neighborhood!"

There are not many carob trees either and the smell is year round.

Pickwick
I was about to say "All hail the mighty pickwick" - then I came across this comment:

"The carob tree is said to smell like sperm when it is in bloom. ..." - and thought "Ooer what does pickwick consider scented"? - I decided not to go down that route

Well we've got 3 huge carob trees in our garden & our neighbours have loads & I've never noticed a particularly pungent odour, sperm like or other, radiating from them.

I am tempted to ask how you know it's not a sperm-like odour . . . but I won't.

Well having always been assured that sperm smells like wallpaper paste (and there is a sound chemical reason for it) I dont reckon:-

a) anybody has been wallpapering that much
b) there's not that much sex going on round CVO to cause a universal odiyr
c) It doesnt smell as sweet as this pervading odour does

However I will certainly investigate all aspects :)
