Portuguese Water Dog Puppy

We were at SCRUFTS last Sunday & a lot of the animal charities were there with loads of puppies & dogs in all shapes & sizes all desperate for good, loving homes. We've always had pedigree dogs in the past but having rescued Lulu, who's a real bits'a dog & kept one of her puppies, we would never buy a pedigree again, there are so many desperate puppies out here, I would always get a rescue dog now.

I agree with you as well blue but we met a lady at the weekend who had a PWD rescue dog which we fell in love with and that is what we are looking for but you never know what will come up.

I have seen a few PWD's looking for good rescue homes, one of the reasons being that as with a lot of working dogs people have underestimated the amount of work that these dogs need, apart from physical exercise of which they need a lot, they're designed to pull boats after all, they need mental stimulation as well being very intelligent dogs. PWD's have wonderful temperaments but if they don't get enough of both they can become unruly & destructive. I'm sure you know all this & have done your research. Lulu has PWD somewhere in her mix, she has the web between the toes & the non-moult coat, personally I would be looking for a mix, another mix that always makes for a brilliant dog is any 'oodle' as in Poodle cross, we have a 10 year old black Retroodle & he's gorgeous I'd have a hundred Beamish'es & he's often mistaken for a PWD even by the Portuguese locals. Any way happy hunting I'm sure you'll find the perfect dog - or it'll find you.

Hi shanagarry - did you manage to get a PWD from a rescue centre? We are looking for a dog and a PWD is high on the list so would really appreciate to know your experiences so far - thanks.

Thank you for asking and no we haven't. The primary reason being us 'toing' and 'froing' to the UK since we moved here. We have two cats that have settled here and friends are happy to pop in and feed them - but a dog is totally different proposition and we will not take one on unless we can give it the care and attention it deserves. Putting it into kennels on a regular basis, while being expensive is also unfair on the animal. Once we get our working routine in order - the opportunity will be revisited. I have seen some advertised in the News/Resident recently and was tempted - but in the end I let my head rule my heart
