Ryanair cabin luggage

FAA rules on " average passenger wt " were changed a few years ago as we all weigh a bit more than when flying first became popular.

This is a critical factor on many shorthaul turbo prop aircraft. Wt of passengers and their luggage is believed to have be been a contributing factor to aircrashes on this type of aircraft.

We usually fly with Ryanair or BMI Baby from East Midlands. My attitude for Ryanair is that you get what you pay for and I have no high expectations. I prefer BMI Baby but the last time I flew to Belfast with them the crew were checking hand luggage with their gauge before boarding. Quite a few bags wouldn't fit and passengers were asked for extra payments for the bags to go on as hold baggage. They were only checking passengers with hand luggage only. They didn't bother with those who had pre-booked hold luggage as well. I think the only thing to do is to stick to the size/weight limits and don't expect a particularly pleasant experience. It is galling though when you stick to the limits but can't get your bag in the overhead locker as someone else has been allowed on with a massive rucksack.

Hi it was interesting to read the last post. Not sure if anybody saw Watchdog last Friday on the BBC and it was all about BMI baby and the hand luggage. Apparently when checking in at the desk there is one cage for hand luggage which is checked and also one at the gate. It turned out that after a viewer informed them that the cage at the gate is smaller than the one in the airport, however he only found this out after having had to pay because his would not fit even though it was the exact dimensions they stipulate on the website. Anyway watchdog investigated and made up a mock case with the exact dimensions and took it to the airport at East Midlands, It fitted the one at the desk but when checking with the one at the gate it would not fit, therefore being much smaller, apparently BMI new about this but did nothing about it and there were I think about 60 in circulation at different airports, so a lot of people therefore have been charged when infact their bag was the right size!! BMI then issued a statement to say they were now replacing all the cages with the right size! and will refund passengers if they can prove they were carrying the right sized hand luggage!!! Just goes to show....

I have just booked Dublin for New Year, flying with Ryanair. My wife is diabetic amongst other medical conditions and carries a hand bag size holdall just for her medication!! I guess I will have to travel without any cabin luggage allowing Liz to carry her medication AND hand bag. Still, only an hour flight so surely we can abide by their rules. Have just spent 15 minutes reading through, as someone pointed out, if we meet their requirments we should be okay. Glad I read some of the points in this link as it gave me advance notice.
Coming back to CVO next May, flying with Monarch who have always been great.
