German Foodshops

Post by shanagarry »

Please excuse me writing in English on your German Forum - but I'm afraid my written German is worse than my spoken attempt.

Having lived in Germany for 4 years in the early 70's I developed a taste for Currywurst and apart from frequent business trips to your wonderful country I would go out of my way to find a way to savour its unusual flavour - I have never been able to buy the sauce anywhere else in Europe.

Can anybody help me find some here in The Algarve please :)

Hi shanagarry,

the typical "Currywurst" is not that type of food I am looking for when I come to Portugal, so unfortunately I can't tell you where you can buy it at the Algarve.

The best would be to cook it fresh - here is one recipe: :!:

1 Flasche Tomatenketchup (einfach)
2 kleine Zwiebel(n) (little onions)
3 EL (EL = tablespoonful of) Balsamico, dunkel (dark balsamico vinegar)
2 EL Honig (Honey)
2 EL Currypulver (Curry powder)
some Chilipulver oder Cayennepfeffer (Chili powder / Cayenne pepper)
1 Spritzer (= a dash) Sojasauce
Olivenöl (Olive oil)
Tomatenmark (tomato puree)
Wasser (water)

You can buy all these ingredients at the Intermarche (road to Lagoa). At the Intermarche (freezing compartment in the front of the cash area) you can also buy the typical german "Bratwurst".

Zubereitung

Preparation
- Cut the onions into pieces und stew/steam them till they are glassy.
- Put tomato puree to the onions and cool it with water.
- Add ketchup.
- Add vinegar and honey and cook it with little heat (vinegar should not vaporize too fast)
- Add soja sauce and other spice.
- Taste, add curry or chili, if necessary.

Greetings from Germany! :P

I believe Frank at the Cattleman Restaurant serves Currywurst, at least he was planning to put it on the menu when he opened in March. He just hadn't gotten around to make the sauce yet.
If you experiment a bit you may come up with your own simple mix, i.e. mix Ketchup (if possible Heinz Hot and Spicy) with lots of curry powder and sweet paprika powder. I hope the German Currywurst Purist don't come down on my head now....
Also the Appolonia Food Store in Guia may have ready made sauce. They come in tall red plastic bottles.

Thank you for keeping in touch - and no I haven't managed to find it. I rang Apolonia and they didn't have it - LIDL have it on occasions and we are going there later today. Watch this space :)

Still nothing to report - drew a blank at LIDL but got something at Leclerc today that appears to do the job. It is Hot Ketchup by Calve.

I will let you know :D
