Recycling in Carvoeiro

Post by James Faro »

What is the position in CVO about recycling?

I know there are few recycling containers on the main town's hill but they are always full or over-flowing.

Whenever I go on holidays I try and leave out separate bags containing plastic bottles, glass, and paper etc and take them to these recycling banks. Where I stayed last year in Albandeira there was on the main road near a roundabout an area to leave refuse. It was in a sorry state so I spent an hour cleaning-up then place and put up a sign in English and bad Portuguese to please place the rubbish in the right containers and/or place any refuse in a neat manner, I am not sure it did any good!

I am just surprised the the main tour operators when letting out villas don't have a policy to try and enthuse holidaymakers to voluntarily recycle. Holidaymakers would soon be amazed at what stuff they accumulate.

Just in case you ask I am not a member of the Green party as that lot, if they had their way, would have us all drive penny farthings, drink grass soup and limit us to one bar of soap a year!

We also try and sort as much of our rubbish out as we can in CVO but those containers are not big enough to service the town they are always overflowing. There is also a lot of resturant waste I see dumped on the side of containers if they are full especially on weekends.
Here in Holland on every other street there are recycling containers for plastics, glass bottles, paper, clothing materials (which go to UNICEF) emptied most days. For garden waste we have out own seperate bins like the Uk I think?. You get used to it so it becomes second nature to really try and recycle as much as possible and no I'm not green either.

There are recycling bins at the back of the QDP minimarket.

When I started to recycle here in London I was HORRIFIED at what we consumed/used and although they were necessary I believed it was important to minimize the extra sources such a demand for products required - hence recycle.

When I stayed at some gold resort near Faro(can't remember the area) there were a row of shops that had recycling bins which come up underground by specialist containers - an ingenious idea so that there is no overflowing.

Maybe I am getting older that is bringing on this recycling attitude. :?

The CVO recycling bins in town are also these underground tanks. The bit you see is only the shute. I suspect that they are not always full, as I have seen bags and boxes of things dumped in the shute. These will not go down the shute, so bin looks full when it is not.

We were watching the recycle bins on the "out road" being emptied last year. It looked like it was all going into the same garbage truck to us!!

Phil, that is exactly what happens in my street! The local council asks us to leave out boxes for glass and paper so it can be recycled. It is recycled all right - it gets chucked in the same truck! Of course, I thought there were compartments in the truck! WRONG! It gets all mashed in the one place! Thus, I take my stuff to the recycling banks!

You couldn't make it up! :o
