Minimum age for car hire

Last year my son (age 21 then) hired a car form the car rental company advertised on this site. Reading the conditions this age has now increased to 23. Does anyone know of any car hire company who will rent cars to 21 year olds. Thanks.

Try: www.sunwheels.com very good value and I'm almost sure they will rent to 21 year olds

I have also hired cars from time to time for people in that age bracket and found that when I personally go to the office to book they do at first insist they are 23 or even 25 in some cases...but they then relent and accept 21 ...it's all very 'Portuguese'.......anyway I have just been asked to hire a car for my 21 year old daughter who is coming out here in June...so I will update you ref my findings in couple of days....

Interested to read chipmunk's comments. Our 19yr old daughter has just been out to our villa in Carvoeiro with a 22yr old girlfriend. I booked the car for them and there was no problem with the friend not being quite 23 so I suspect most of them will accept younger drivers if pushed.

Having said that, our two got a fright on their first venture out to find the night life - they decided to go to Albufeira and got pulled over and breathalysed by the police on their way home in the early hours of the morning. Fortunately the friend had not been drinking so they were OK but they took taxis for their subsequent ventures !

I think you will find Holiday Autos accept 21 or over.

Sorry to drag this one back to the top but if anyone is interested I have discovered that destination-portugal.co.uk hire to anyone over 21, and will even hire to 19 and 20 year olds for an additional 65 euros.

Also may interest those that hire a lot that you can book year round CDW waiver for 49 Euros - that seems to pay for itself after only the first week!

We have also done this through a company advertising in the Easyjet magazine. It cost £49 also, and as we hire a car each time we come out (approx once a month) it has saved us loads.

What say steen ..will algarve driver accept the year round waiver?....or better still why don,t you guys organise it .....would sure save me a little money and a little bother.

Hi Steen, the company we went through is at www.insurance4carhire.com for an anual premium of £49 we are covered for the 'extra' Loss Damage Waiver Reimbursement in Europe (including all countries to the west of the Ural Mountains, islands in the Mediterranean, Moroco, Tunisia, Turkey and Canary Islands, Madeira amd the Azores) hope that is of help to you.

Steen - Lesley has got it right - it is a link from destination-portugal to insurance4carhire.com - and my mistake, it is £49 not E49 but still good value.

I think it is something that you could sell through this site with good results - what do you think?

We can make the same offer, but only for our customers. The 1 year insurance wouldn't cover rentals at other companies.

I believe you get the same cover with i.e. a gold Visa
