Mistral - you won't eat it all!
The Mistral restaurant (or as our family used to call it – the Restaurant with the Tree) is a fabulous restaurant on the “out road” from Carvoeiro. An immediate comment to make is that soon it will no longer be the “Restaurant with the Tree” – the tree has succumbed to disease and has been pruned back – it will be gone within 2 years I was told.
However, back to food and restaurants. I would recommend you book a table on Monday or Friday as they have live music from 9:30 onwards – a pleasant mix of Brazilian jazz and some more modern tunes. I cannot say if booking is required for the rest of the week – we only ate there on Friday and Monday.
The first impression of this restaurant is the friendliness of the staff. The waitresses (bearing in mind this is a 50+ bloke speaking, but its true!!) are stunningly pretty – one of them had such a smile lights were not needed – she lit up the entire restaurant. Even the young waiter was attractive – if you like that sort of thing! However, you are welcomed with a smile, served with a smile and sent away with a smile – beautiful.
More importantly (for some!) is the food. This is a restaurant for the hungry man – the portions are huge – and good quality too. Be aware though – on the Monday I had a mushroom kebab to start with, followed by sirloin steak, cooked rare. The kebab was a main course on its own, and the steak was at least 20 ounces. No dessert – I got caught the previous Friday with a portion of Chocolate cake – too much for 2 of us who shared it.
The food is good though – the price is reasonable too – 3 adults, 1 litre Sangria, a fresh orange, 3 beers and coffees was around 75euros.
A good restaurant – well worth the visit.

We visited for the first time last week. It was so good we went back again for a second visit during our 10 day stay. Excellent value, and superbly cooked food. Service is the best I have seen on the Algarve, and we have been coming for nearly 20 years. The owner is an absolute enthusiast - he took great trouble in describing everything in detail, even something that he didn't have on the evening we were there! And the portions - well, I completely agree with HampshireRich - they are the most generous I have seen. I made a point of watching some other diners when their meals arrived - the raising of eyebrows was amusing. However, the quality is great, and it's so nice to have dishes with more than just the normal selection of boring vegetables. Strongly recommended.

Just back from another short stay at Rocha Brava. Mistral was unanimously agreed as the best overall restaurant we tried. Best food, best service and best overall value. We went to seven restaurants altogether - if I can find a suitable thread I shall give a summary of our scores. We were amazed that while many of the restaurants on the "hill" were getting busy, Mistral was almost deserted.....
