Nearest hospital
Hello all
Friends of ours are hoping to stay in our property on QDP sometime this year. They have an adopted daughter with severe disabilities and, wherever they travel, they need to have the adddress and contact details of the nearest hospital with a paediatric department to hand in case the girl needs medical help.
Could anyone let me know whether Faro Hospital would be the nearest, or whether there's a paediatric unit nearer? Address/contact details would also be appreciated, but I'm sure I could look these up if necessary.
Many thanks
Louise

More details about such services can be seen (CLICK HERE) including the hospital web page.

Re: Nearest hospital
The main hospital in the area is not the private one in MC's reply but is the one by the Portimao exit of the N125. You can't miss it - it is a large conspicuous building visible from the N125 and has a helipad for A&E air ambulance. Anyone in the area would be able to direct you should you need it - hopefully you will not.
Don't forget your EU health card.

Re: Nearest hospital
It is also extremely well signposted from every road in the area.

Re: Nearest hospital
Thanks for your replies. Could you tell me the name of the hospital in Portimao, please? Is it Barlavento, or is it just Portimao Hospital?
I did look up the one on the FAQs but as you say it's a private hospital - I didn't think that would be the only option in the area.

Re: Nearest hospital
Portimao hospital is very easy to find.
Just drive from Carvoeiro along the N125 towards Portimao.
After you cross the lovely big bridge over the Arade river, there will be 2 turn offs, very close together. The first for Monchique, the 2nd for Portimao. As you take this turn you will see the hospital from the N125. Its the big building....you cant miss it!
As soon as you come off the N125 towards Portimao, you will see the signs for the hospital on your right.

Re: Nearest hospital
Very helpful Bruce, thank you.
I'll pass the info on - hopefully our friends won't need to make a visit in any case.

Re: Nearest hospital
You could try the goggle map to trace the exact location of the hospital and try to compare the distance. You could calculate its distance for just like that without getting there exactly.

Hi all,
We used the one at Lagoa last year and they were brilliant, does anyone know if they have an A&E department?

Re: Nearest hospital
Sadly one of our guests a couple of years ago was taken very ill and had to spend a couple of weeks in the Portimao hospital - however, in her experience it couldn't be faulted. the cleanliness was astonishing - they literally dismantled the bedside table every day to clean it and if you had a shower the cubicle was thoroughly cleaned immediately afterwards even if it was during the night. Special praise has to go to the kind bi-lingual English gentleman who goes round the hosital every day checking for British patients and helps them with anything from translation to calling home. There really is no need to go to the private hospital when the public one is so good.

Re: Nearest hospital
I can only echo what Graham said about the Barlavento hospital in Portimao. My wife spent 10 days there in 2007, and had first class treatment.
