next door field to villa which has numerous old olive and carob trees are all being cut down by three men with chainsaws - and why?

to plant oranges!

but next door to this ongoing carnage is another orange orchard with as many oranges on the floor rotting as are on the trees

so why plant more when according to a neighbor the local agricultural co.op only pays 5 cents a kilo, which is why its hardly economic to pick what is already growing.

but then of course I suppose EU grants come into force, remember "butter mountains"

Surprising that other things are not planted or is that being simplistic?

Sacrilege, Olive Trees and Carob Trees! they need shooting! Is the no equivalent to our tree preservation authority, surely there must be?

Maybe they don't get enough return on the carob & olive trees, they've got to make a living & just because the crops are rotting on the ground now doesn't mean they will be in the future, also orange trees have a limited productive life span. I don't like it either but I don't know their reasons. We've got 3 huge carobs in out garden & lots of olives. The locals come in & harvest the carobs, this year the old boy gave me a bottle of his very own homemade madrona (lethal!) by way of a thank you.

Carob trees and olive trees are beautiful but not money makers. I am happy to see the upswing in agriculture in this area, whether it is grape vines or orange orchards. It is almost sacrilege not to put the land to work..and importing oranges from Spain?

Be happy they aren't cutting everything down to build holiday apartments or townhomes!

I know. I find it a shame especially with so many units sitting empty or in need of renovation.
