Cats to portugal

Having thought of bringing our 2 mogs to portugal and discussed all the ramifactions of bringing them in terms of vets/illnesses etc - we have never checked the cost/problems associated with flying them out with us. Anyone ever done this? is it possible on the cheapo flts? costs?

I would also be interested in this answer. Also has anyone actually taken a UK moggie over to Portugal and have they settled in well.
Our cat is a great hunter and in the UK catches, squirrels, birds, mice etc, I wonder what would be his Portugese substitutes and wether he would come off worse

We brought our cat from Muscat Oman to Miri Malaysia by air. We were lucky enough to be able to book him on our flight as excess baggage, otherwise we would have had to arrange live animal freight which would have been more expensive. You would need an airline approved box (our vet provided the dimensions but they are probably also available on-line) the box needs to be sturdy (ours was plywood) be big enough to allow movement, have slotted windows for air and visibility and a container that can be topped up with water from outside using a tube. It is not advisable to feed the cat and he won't miss a few hours without food but it is essential to keep him hydrated. The use of sedatives is also discouraged these days as the pressure changes can be dangerous. Most commercial aeroplanes have a heated, pressurised cargo section where live animals can be transported. We also ensured, via a member of the cabin crew, that the flight crew were aware that there was a live animal on board (there is a popular cautionary tale of a pilot not knowing he had a cargo of tropical fish in tanks on board - the flight arrived with some very large fish lollies). The airport staff in Kuala Lumpur were kind enough to let us see our cat before the onward domestic leg of our journey and he was none the worse for wear after an 8 hour flight. In the end it proved to be a surprisingly straightforward process.

I have read that some of the budget airlines will NOT take live animals so you may be limited to the large carriers like BA, TAP etc.

My wife and I flew our 2 12 year old White Tortoishell cats over in 2007. We were very apprehensive but really had no alternative, we contacted Monarch who have a dedicated section on their Website which puts you in touch with a specialised team.

It was not cheap ,but a least they arrived here in the shortest possible time. Although unhappy at being cooped up for so long they have adapted very well and seem to love it here, so if you enjoy the company of your animals i say go for it,
