red palm weevil

There's a commercial on Kiss FM by some organisation offering a service to sort this out but by the sound of it - it's not quite that straightforward.

We are back tomorrow and will be straight into the garden as we have 5 large and well established palms that hopefully have not been infected

checked the chemical attraction trap today(see above) in last 2 weeks it has caught 12 flying weevils

the trap has now caught 25 flying weevils

in our area of approx 1.2 kilometre we now have approx 10 palms affected...with some very tall ones are dying, some have been cut down with others have been left by owners ( why?) and which no doubt serving as a breeding ground to infect any healthy palms

in last two months all has been quiet but now trap has caught 5, so it seems they getting busy again

Neighbors on both sides of us have been affected, but our palms are standing tall. Fingers crossed.

We have done the prevention with injection, but not the newest craze of shaving down the trunk etc. I think we are done spending money. If we lose them, we do and we will replace them with something else. Sad, but there are no guarantees and I am leery of throwing EUR after EUR at the problem with the hope that it might just work.

So, guys, any suggestions on fast growing non deciduous trees that provide shade and a nice rustle in the wind?

Do the weevils leave " dead " palms or do these continue to provide a home for these pests.

I have noticed a number of dead palms in gardens on roadsides, if these are left standing then surely the weevil will not be eliminated.

I think that they do not leave them. IIRC, you are supposed to remove the dead ones and burn them, but I am no expert.

tis the season again for the bugs to be flying...caught three this last week

went today to a local agro chemical firm to get more chemical attraction pouches for the trap, it seems their supplier has been out of stock for 3 weeks. The man at the firm said the bug is now in the Lisbon area and also in Madeira and the Azores, despite quarantine efforts some have not obeyed the law.

According to the man apparently Lagos CM spent 200000 euros on new palms for the city last year and have only got 10 left from their purchase as a result of the weevil, one reason is they have not followed the instructions to hang the traps away from the palms, but instead have hung them on the plants
