River trip
River trip
I have heard there is a great river boat trip somewhere in the Algarve. A bit vague I know, but does anyone know where it might be?

Re: River trip
Thanks again, I'll check them out to see if they do day trips.
Re: River trip
There was a trip from Portimao via Villamoura that went up the river at Villa real. ithink it was 2/3 nights but not sure if it stil runs in the summer.
Re: River trip
Think it is most likely to be along the Guardiana River which devides Portual from Spain, trips I think from Vila Real/Ayamonte area. Think they only operate in the main season.
Re: River trip
That sounds like it Jaylay. I'll take a drive over there next week and check it out. Thanks

If you find it, post it here, please; Sharen and I would be interested in such a cruise.tjthedj wrote:That sounds like it Jaylay. I'll take a drive over there next week and check it out. Thanks

Re: River trip
My wife and I took a good boat trip up the Guadiana River from Villa Real de St. Antonio to a small village, a couple of hours cruising time upriver. As most will know, the Guadiana separates Portugal from Spain. Most tour companies include this cruise in their excursion options. Leaflets are also available from most tourist/ticket offices for independent travellers. We went on the trip in 2007, but it was still running last year (2009). It is possibly a seasonal operation. Pretty certain it runs from May to October, but it could be longer.
On reaching the village, the boat ties up and passengers are taken on a short tour of the village (if they wish). You are guided past some little old ladies selling goat's cheese from their house for a few euros a pack. Then it's on to a purpose-built restaurant with a swimming pool. Lunch is served in the large dining room. Usual fare - endless free wine and soft drinks, BBQ chicken and sardines with salad and fresh bread (if you bought the goats cheese now's a good time to use it). Fresh fruit selection for afters. When the food is finished with, the serving and kitchen staff suddenly appear with accordians, guitars and tambourines and march round the room inviting diners to join in the musical festivities. Great atmosphere! After a stay of around a couple of hours it's back to the boat for the return journey to Villa Real. Can't remember the name of the company, but leaflets are available as mentioned above.
