ryanair easyjet dont charge card fees for visa electron cards on flights

i have a BPI bank visa electron card and i cant get it to work with the above the problem i have is that there is no 3 number security code on the back has anyone get around this yet or is any other portugal bank issueing visa electron cards

We have had the same problem with our debit card issued by Millennium bank i.e. no secrity code, which means that you can not use the card for any on-line transaction. When we spoke to the bank about it, they said that Portuguese banks do not issue cards with the security code on them. They also said that if we wanted to make transactions over the internet then we had to use our credit card, which of course you get charged for.

To date we have found no alternative solution, so if anyone has it would be greatly appreciated to find out about it!

I have tried my Millennium Visa Electron card for booking flights & card is rejected because there is no security number on the back. Your best bet is, if you live in the UK is to open an Halifax easycash account with a Visa debit Electron Card. The account is basic, no cheque book, no interest, & no overdraft facility. You must have enough money in the account for any of your transactions. You can apply online and it takes about 3/4 weeks for your card to come through. The co-operative bank also do Visa Electron Card as well & you can also apply online. We have saved quite a few pounds in card charges when booking flights since I applied for one.

That's all OK if you live in the UK, but we live here in Portugal so are not allowed to open a bank account in the UK.

As you say Ma Ja Portuguese debit electron cards don't have the 3 digit security number on the back, so I wouldn't have a clue how you would get one with the digit code on. Done a search but nothing comes up positive.
If you have family in UK could you not get them to apply for one so they could book your flights for you & reimburse them for the amount involved, the person who books the flights doesn't have to be the cardholder who pays for them.

We have a Visa Electron card issued by the BBVA and this has the digits on the back. Did try to use it last week to book flights with Ryan Air as it was in euros but it rejected it.

There is some information on this topic on the expatfocus for Portugal, if this is any help, I haven't tried it myself but was hoping to do so next time I am in Portugal.

Many thanks for this - greatly appreciated - it is something I will definitely be trying next time I want to make an internet purchase Then all I will need to do to make "free" internet purchases is to find out if Millennium bank issue Electron cards.

Halifax, HBOS and the post office are still issuing Visa Electro cards - but they are being phased out . Ryanair (and some others) only offer visa Electron free because by law they have to offer a no charge credit card transaction and there are only a few (reltively) cards about - if they are going to be phased out that will make it interesting!

As usual Ryan Air Spokesman came up with the usual load of """" " we don,t know if we make money chargeing £5/person/ booking "
and it does not matter to our customers if we do not show the total price until they are at the stge of paying.!!

Actually Mr Lewis was on Breakfast TV - werent you up early enough for that EMM? I have just checked flts for march and guess what? Ryanair are cheapest - but only because they are offering no taxes on 2 flts - makes it £110 for 2 return (instead of £180!) - nearest is monarch at £140 so £30 cheaper BUT you have to add the £20 CC fee compared to £7 for monarch, so I wont be conned into them again for a £17 saving with no seat recline, no magazine rack or tray.

The banks that issue these cards visa electron are beginning to phase them out. It originally was issued to students and the like of (high risk). Ryanair allowed these cards to be charged for free so that they did not have put them on price up front ie you do have the oppourtunity not to pay charges if you use this type of card.If they had to charge for all credit card transactions then they would have to put the price on the ticket. Its basically a con but allowed by law.
Try and get one I think HSBC may be your only chance.

I had a letter from Millennium bcp yesterday which said that they are replacing the Electron debit card with a Maestro card with chip EMV (what ever that is). I suspect that this may then solve the problem. My current card is Electron with the security numbers but no chip - I have tried to use it to pay for flights from Portugal but it has been rejected.

forget the electron card - Ryanair announced yesterday they will no longer accept it after end Dec - you can only get free payment using a prepaid master card
