Quinta de Sao Bento - in the hills
Quinta de Sao Bento - in the hills
Has anyone else been here?
If you want somewhere for a special meal this place is a real find. In the hills between Monchique and Foia (off the LH side near the top, but still in the forest as you go up to Foia). We found the place on spec as we came down from pottering around the summit and were looking for a 'snack' type lunch. We ventured down the track off the road into a deserted car park and wandered into the front garden - terraced gardens going down to a pool terrace with lovely views down the valley, huge conservatory where they cater for functions and weddings and a large upstairs dining room in the house. The place was empty but the owner Claudia came out and offered to put together a set lunch for the 4 of us with pork in almond sauce as the main course. We decided to just go with whatever they came up with and wandered round the garden while they set up a table in the shade on the patio outside the house. Our 'snack' lunch ended up as a 4 course treat - wonderful 'mezze' type starters followed by home-made gazpacho soup, a delicious pork in creamy almond sauce main course followed by home-made icecream sorbet with fruity dressing. The whole thing absolutely delicious and cost 30E a head - so not a cheap snack but an excellent quality meal - and we didn't need to eat again for 24 hours! If we had really wanted just a 'snack' we should have said so - but we didn't regret it one bit! So, if you want a quality meal somewhere a bit different up in the cooler hills give this place a try.

I so agree Allison - a similar thing happened to my sister and I - looking for a 'snack' coming down from Foia we came to this place. It was lovely. I could never remember the name of it till now!
