Fishing

Post by ciderman »

when on holiday in cvo last year I paid a visit to algor seco and noticed a guy fishing off the rocks , could anyone tell me what fish he would be likely to catch there and what bait is likely to have been used, ( thinking about bringing my telescopic rod this year.

Also is there anywhere locally that you can hire kayaks?

Many thanks :D

At this time of the year the fish in " season " is horse mackeral ( Carapau ) which is OK.

Its too hot and sunny for Bass they usually start to some inshore in the autumn.

You could also catch small black bream.

You do need a lisence to fish from both shore and boat.

You can hire kayaks in Alvor.

But Horse mackeral ( a different species ) is Carapau and this is the " cheap " fish on sale everywhere at the moment.
Also known in some part sof the uk as Shad ( not to be confused with allis or twaite shad ).

I have Portuguese friends fishing for robalo now. Carapau according to our Portuguese fishmonger is, when caught locally, the same species as cavala just smaller. I asked him when my husband & I disagreed over the name for mackerel, I said it was cavala & he said carapau. I love them both but prefer cavala.

If you go to the fishing shop in Carvoeiro on the " IN ROAD " at the top end I am sure he will help you sort out the lisence which you can buy via a multi banco machine.

The bait is usually shellfish or prawns or pcs of small fish.

The local make up buckets of foull smelling fishy groundbait which they use.

I am planning to mix prawn heads and shells with old bread and give this a try when next back and it has cooled down a bit.
Also remember that there is quite a tide in the algarve

If you want to see what yo can catch go to lagoa market early or ferragudo fish dock there you can see both species of mackeral,( carapau and cavala ) bream, bass etc caught locally.

Cavala is the mackeral as we know it and has a bluish sheen to its skin Carapau ( horse mackeral ) is greenish and less oily.
This is shipped in large quantities to holland and germany and is used in various smoked fish products.

I am going out on a small sailing boat from Alvor on monday and taking my spinning rod and lures , will report back.

Thanks EMM for that info , when you say there is quite a tide in the algarve do you mean a strong tide or a large tidal range , where I live (a tiny island called sark in the channel islands) we have a 10 mt tidal range so have to pick our times for shore fishing carefully.

cheers

You can buy basic outfits in Intermarche ( i think ) Decathalon at Portimao or in most of the Chinese shops.

The tidal range is nothing like the Channel islands, cetainly does not have the currents.

We went out on a small wooden sailing boat on monday from Alvor.
There are two which have come down from the lisbon area where they where used to carry cargo in year past on the river tagus.

We were under sail for 80% of the time.

Fishing rods are provided with lures which are trolled behind, unfortunately because of the strong winds the lures were going a bit too fast but I switched the one provided with some of my own.

As soon as the speed dropped we had hits from mackerel ( cavala ).

On the right day sport could be very good.

In addition there is the charm of boat under sail plus time to swim in crystal clear water in a cove near lagos.

We fairly flew back to alvor watching the thunderstorm , rain and lightning over Portimao and carvoeiro.

The trip can be booled from a booth on the seafront in Alvor but be aware that they do not go out in Strong winds frwom the s east and a light lunch is suggested.
