Boat trips

Post by fmm »

We would like to go on a boat trip. We have seen boat trips around the caves for 1 hour for 15 euros per person - are these worth doing (anyone been on one?)

We are both likely to be seasick if there is any chance of bouncy waves, so need to take this into consideration as well. Or perhaps we can hire a speed boat or something like that (I am sure we would be fine if we were driving ...)

Basically, what can you tell me about sea type activities that don't cost a fortune?

Ta!

A couple of years ago, one of my sons came out to join us, and he fancied a trip round the caves. We went on the Santa Bernada (the diesel powered mini-galleon the sails out of Portimao) and sailed east, past Carvoeiro to a point just beyond Benagil. I was fine up to that point, but after transferring to the small dinghy to go into the caves, I was decidedly unwell. I had had a prawn sandwich for lunch before setting off, and somewhere off Benagil, I unceremoniously despatched the prawns back from whence they came! I shall not be risking any more trips round the caves.

boat trips in the fishermans boats off the beach are very good - because they are such small boats they can take you (waves permitting ) into the caves , many of which are spectacular .They usually take you past Cetianes and Carvalho beaches and as far as Benagil . But choose your trip carefully - I have been out on several and on one occasion it was very choppy and on the way back we very nearly got thrown out ! As long as its calm they are fine but if its at all choppy - leave it to another day

Try one of the many boat trips from Alvor ranging from 1hour to all day. We tried one which really did not go out in the rough seas as such cost
15 euros lasted 1 1/2 hours stopped at a sandbank for a little dip and if windy enough also does a bit of sailing. Was about as rough as my bath tub and beer on board was a euro a bottle !

We love the short trips from the Town Beach around the caves, also very reasonable price. Unlikely you will be seasick, but a tip - go in the morning, as the wind tends to get up in the afternoon & it gets more choppy.
