Help Please- Car hire for a 21year old

Post by TCSltd »

My 21 year old son arrived at Faro last night to find that the car hire company (AV RentCar.com) would not honour his booking, unless he was prepared to pay a further 22 euros /day. This was because of his age.(This was made clear to them at the time of reservation). He had not budgeted for this and could not afford it! He tried various other airport based hirers, but there were no cars available, so had no choice but to take a Taxi.

He is staying in my country property near Poco Barreto so is now stranded without transport.

Can anyone recommend a local hire company that would accept younger drivers?

Can anyone suggest a local reasonable taxi. ( His fare from Faro was 86euros (ouch  )

Sorry I can't help except to say that the only way we could get our daughters a hire car when they were under 25 was to put the car in our name with them as a second driver which then cost 21 euros extra, not a day but for the rental, that was with YOR/Algarve driver who advertise on this site. Most car hire companies will not accept under 21's without loading them I am afraid.

Also most of the hire companies seem to be very short of cars this year as per another thread on the forum.

Oh well .... he has the 'Bordello' to keep him occupied.....

I think stock is the biggest issue this year as we were told the smallest available group was D at over 200€ per week. My guess is, that that is a bit over budget.

The taxis down here are all metered and the meter should run on the rates established for the day/time he travelled, so it shoud not make a difference which company you use.
