For the contibutor who knocks frozen food well -

•It's impossible for bacteria to multiply on frozen food - which makes it safer than any other form of food preservation.
•Many foods today are 'quick frozen'. This is a process, which freezes the water in the food into smaller ice crystals, minimizing cell structure damage. Quick-freezing foods and then storing them at temperatures -18°C or lower slows the natural degradation process practically to zero.
•Store frozen food correctly, and it will retain its colour, texture, nutritional value and taste.

Don't make the un-educated assumption that frozen food equates to lower quality. Quite often some of the best quality 'fresh fish' will have been frozen out at sea within 1hr of being caught....

Ive always understood frozen food to be equal to fresh food? As we have with peas.. frozen from the moment of picking?

I read in a food magazine that one of the 'safest' foods to eat is fish & chips ..cos they are fried at such a high temperature. I guess that would apply to all food stuffs that are cooked this way?

I agree Jasmac. As a person who was an EHO and still does, as a private consultant, and one who has a degree in Applied Science and microbiology I am well aware of all the factors involved.If you had read the thread correctly I was reffering to quality and source of food products, that one wishes to pay for in an food establishment. As afood hygiene consultant inspector, I believe you will find I am more qualified to discuss such matters than yourself, unless of course you are more qualified.Temp control being an optimum matter for all concerned etc.
Ellie,yes frozen fish is a good source of fish if one cannot obtain fresh fish, and yes frozen peas and similiar are best. This is not contested on what one was discussing on this thread. Merely a mention that cheap jarred sauces were used in the takeaway alongside bags of cheap frozen chicken a while back. With prices and costs involved it was a statement of fact that I was being served a chicken curry that the lady eluded she had made that was of poor quality and overpriced. It was mentioned this was 16 months ago and that I preferred the takeaway up the road on the oposite side where they tended to use more fresh products.
Do not always believe what you read in general magazines etc consumed for the general public and written by people who actually are not aware or understand the facts correctly ,they only provide a generalisation for average understanding.
It is an induvidual matter whether or not one wishes to pay for cheap poor quality food at an overpriced cost or to pay a cost considering the quality and type of product.
I shall as mentioned, try the place again , as it has been taken over by new management since I last ate there and provide a comment on our return.

Also I have spent time on a factory ship that does catch and process the fish for public consumtion as part of my training and understanding of such processes. The micobial aspect being my main objective at the time as we took along a small lab to ascertain levels and types of intrinsic and extrinsic microbial factors.
I have sussessfuly prosecuted two failings in this sector in the past, once against a well known supermarket chain and secondly against a well known purveyor of frozen fish both as a private consultant and in the council at the time of being employed there.

You've jogged a distant memory in me. When we lived in London there was a Chinese restaurant within walking distance of our home....
I used the local butcher. One day I was buyng the sunday joint for roasting and our talk got around to the Chinese place......the butcher said to me " I wouldn't eat in there if I were you"
I asked why? He said "Because they buy the cheapest cuts of meat and the oldest chickens!"
Needless to say, we never ate in there

Hell Elie, certainly not superior knowledge, just a little knowledge only.
Piri chicken is a fav of mine, not Richard's as he does not like anything hot.
I think some others mentioned places inland and up towards the Monchique areas tend to do pretty good piri chicken too.
