THe program on Spain ( ok usual tv over the top ) was the perfect reason for anyone thinking about it to chose Portugal over Spain.
It is the fear ( unlikely ) that the Algarve coastline would be inundated with Monte Santo type developments that is the reason why so many of us have negative views about it.

The last thing any of us want is a chain of such developments stretching from Villa Real to Sagres and it ending up looking like the Spanish Costas.

I think given the choice either to live in the UK in my two-up, two-down or in Monte Santo, I'd choose the latter.

Yep agree MC, Could at least flog the one on M.S. and then find somewhere pretty to live in the area, leaving those that love M.S to them that like living there,should have a pretty penny left over in ones pocket too.

Totally agree that benefits of Algarve vs Spain are the planning restrictions which retains its Portuguese feel....had a weekend in Marbella a few years back and was taken back at all the high rises when I thought the place was meant to be nice. Also reason I chose CVO over East Algarve (e.g. Villamoura).

However, CVO has to move forward (as with alot of Portugal not exactly booming at present) and cannot sustain itself on just the locals, ex pats, and Villa market (many which are empty more times than not). Therefore am not averse to the odd larger scale development as long as its nice. The more visitors coming to CVO will support the local business's and possibly encourage new entrants for the benefit of all. As someone pointed out, Monte Santo is actually quite a plush 5* development.....if people actually went in there before making judgements you would see the excellent lesiure facilities and I don't think anyone would be dissapointed with a couple of weeks there.

I don't doubt that people will spend happy holidays there, if that's what they are looking for - personally I prefer to be part of the place I live/stay in, rather than a separate 'exclusive' resort which could be anywhere, but we're all different and IMHO it could have been made so much nicer with a bit more thought and consideration for the existing surroundings

Yes personally I agree with you and also prefer a 'mingle with the locals' holiday experience, but each for their own. However suppose its nice every now and again to just chill out and enjoy the surroundings...

If someone would like to give me a property in the Monte Santo resort, I am pretty certain I could grow to like it

Maybe MONTE SANTO should improve its PR and appear a bit more welcoming to non residents.
( but then those who are paying their prices to stay there might not agree )

I have been there & like many others watched it being built, the land had been prep'ed for development for many years before building started & we looked forward to seeing what the new development would look like, what a disappointment totally lacking in charm or character, of course security is important but it looks like an upmarket open prison, of course Carvoeiro has to develop but not into that souless chain of estates. I hope there won't be too many more of them. But each to their own & if the owners are happy with their purchase then that's all that should matter to them.

My main gripe with Monte Santo is the glass balconies, we are just behind the complex,
but I wonder what you do in the morning when you walk outside on the balcony, only to remember you haven't put your dressing gown (or nightie on_

Monte Santo is right next to our house (I can see you in your jammies Rossi's idol!).
I do regret that the open land was developed and I miss the bells of the occasional goat, the wildflowers and pathways, but development was inevitable and I'm very glad it was taken over by an upmarket resort rather than something scruffy.
I only hope that the terracotta colour paint job fades with time. In the meantime we'll be planting a hedge so that Rossi's idol can't spot me getting squiffy on the roof terrace over our sundowners.
