As of this weekend they are within a few metres of completing the calcada on the out road. Then it is just a case of getting Hemmingway's to move their chairs out of the way, so they can complete the paving. Will be interesting to see what happens to traffic flow when Rua do Baranco is back in use. Watching the traffic from Smilers this pm it remains fairly caotic with people walking from the beach thinking the square is theirs, only to find traffic sharing the same space. Also two cars ignored the signs and came down Farol the wrong way and finished up having to do a u-turn at the square. Actually the square itself, by the restaurants, no longer looks wide open, because the restaurants either side have stretched their outside seating so far they are in danger of meeting in the middle!

Public service vehicles, which at the moment mainly means the taxis. It is the same restriction I hoped would be placed on vehicles crossing the square, but we will have to wait and see. Just hope they also scrub the tyre marks off the new paving, as and when the traffic flow changes, since it is looking messy.

Only taxis are allowed down there at the moment. It would be impossible for buses to do a 3 point turn at the bottom!!

I hope the roads go back as they were, after the square and the in and out roads have been completed. The square has now been opened up by removing all the parking places at the square and the lower ends of the in and out roads, giving pedestrians more space for walking and encouraging people to browse in shop windows, I thought it was a big improvement. However I think if the road by the ice cream parlour remains a down road and the Monte Dourado Road stays as the main road from the top of Restaurant Hill, there is going to be an accident. Both these roads have cars coming down at crazy speeds especially Monte Dourado.

I have completely lost the plot on what they are trying to do, where we can walk, where we can drive, where we can park (if any) etc etc. :(

I agree i clicked onto the webcam this morning and at one time there were cars " parked " in the square and out side of the CVO sol
but i think I also saw a GNR car and the parked cars are now nowhere to be seen.

Nice to see the " train " is back.
It would not take too much effort to put speed humps uphill from sullys to slow cars down would it ?

It is also going down the eastern ramp from the church, so I hope it's brakes are better than they were last year!

Hemingways would gladly move their chairs, unfortunately for the last 2 weeks we have been told tomorrow, tomorrow then we had the holiday then they ran out of paving stones again.... so every morning we are there waiting to see if we can put out our table and chairs or if at long last we will have paving stones and be able to say bye to the beach bar....very sore on the old legs. So hopefully if the paving stones arrive today (still no sign at 3.00pm) they will start tomorrow. :D

I hate to ask this . . . . but in all honesty, does anyone actually think the works will be over by September?

I believe that once they complete the narrowing of the in and out roads, they will pause for the main tourist season. Having said that, given that none of the completion deadlines have been met so far, predicting final completion has to be difficult. :(
