I'm looking for info please: renting a bar?

I said I would find out what I could for a friend of mine who is interested in renting a bar somewhere nice and sunny!
I suggested the Algarve and in particular somewhere like Carvoeiro. I know nothing about the ins and ous of this kind of thing or where to look to find one. Does anyone know where I might find this sort of information?

about 12 years ago there were 92 bars and rest in cvo..i am sure by now there are many more...how they all pay is one of the great mysteries of the world..in fact on the bbc "living the dream" mona lisa episode it stated only 12% of bars make money...then there is all the beaucracy...enough to drive any sane person mad..

i would think long and hard about a bar here...sorry to be negative but it is so sad when so many come and arrive with their dreams and leave with nightmares...if you can see the bbc series..its an excellent training video

Fully understand the last post but.......speaking from experience half the problem is just doing it...chances are it will work out..maybe just take a bit longer then you thought..and if you fail they cant shoot you,you wont starve,you wont be homeless..whats the very worst that can happen?go for it you,ll be fine.You don,t fancy buying a little pub in ireland do you?

Well I think we've all seen these series where families decide to pack up and move abroad and I think the main problems are that they either do it on a whim or without putting any real thought behind it and don't know what they are doing.

I've been thinking about moving abroad for years and have done much research....... anyway this isn't about me......

I think what we are looking for here is a bar that's coming up for rent that is already pretty well established. I'm assuming you can just rent a bar as I'm clueless about all this. I just really need some pointers as to where to look I think.

I'm sure Ireland is lovely Gerry, I have never been, but will visit one day. But as for permanent living I need a warmer climate. As does the friend of mine who wants to find a bar.........

The Safari Bar may be available, spoke to Stuart last week and he said he was now retired - I don't know who the contact would be, maybe someone on the ground can help?

Debs G, take my advice and talk your friend out of it. This is a dreadful year so far and doesn't look like getting any better. Bad time for starting up a new buisness, especially bar or rest. Take a look around the town and check out how many places are for sale, that's an example of how things are going

Won't the Algarve get busier especially with the football tournament coming up? Hope none of our favourite places are struggling or up for sale.

Friends' experience of buying a restaurant in Lagos which was lovely-extremely long hours which they were used to after working in bars and restaurants but unfortunately they just didn't get enough custom & had to sell up.

Good luck though to anyone who can go for their dream!

Nice negative comment there pinkie!!! I would advise take the chance and live the dream... Who knows maybe your friend has something unique to offer CVO??? if you don´t you will never know!

i am sorry to say that every bar owner thinks he has some special "ace" to win custom.....frankly there are just too many chasing what is in effect just a summer business. looking at the links for places to sell..i am appalled at the prices quoted...they are just daylight robbery.

why not stay in the uk and open a bar..i am sure you will have more chance of success than here....as far you "wont starve"...there is an old saying here...how to make a small fortune in the algarve? answer ...start with a big one and wait.

“take my advice and talk your friend out of it”, this is good advise, so beware of the yea-go-for-it merchants who obviously don’t know what they are talking about or who they are talking to.

However, I disagree with pinkiebluesky’s reasons: “this is a dreadful year”. In my experience, when starting out on a new venture, it’s best done when the market is depressed; find your feet and prepare yourself for the boom. After all - unless you are some kind of hopeless joy rider - running a bar has got to be approached like any other business, as a serious long-term commitment.

(and I suspect, pinkiebluesky, you are a barman. am I right?)

My friend doesn't want to stay in the UK and I can undestand that.
Whether or not renting a bar in the Algarve or Spain or wherever would be a good idea, well that's not for me to say. I was just looking for a bit of info. Can anyone help with that?

Maybe its not a great idea or a great time to be setting up a business of that nature. I guess looking at the books of a business before taking it on is always a good idea though!
I think my friend has his head screwed on right and wouldn't take on anything that looks like a disaster!
