Carvoeiro shopping recommendations

Post by starvedofsun »

We're renting a Villa in Carvoeiro this summer and this will a first time visit to both Carvoeiro and the Algarve. I'm looking for some recommendations for good places in the village to buy meat, fish and general groceries. Also is there any good local wine worth trying and are there any good local cooperatives where we could buy this

We have been visiting the Algarve, mainly Silves and Carvoeiro for the last 7 years. We have always shopped at Modelo which has an excellent choice of fresh and tinned goods. The Modelo own label brands are equally as nice if not better than in English supermarkets and at a fraction of the price. The market/snackbar at the bottom of the steep hill in Carvoeiro also sell a wonderful range of fresh meat, cheese, veg and bakery items. It does close at lunch time so need to get there early. The snack bar is also good value for money.

We have visited CVO several times yet for some reason oly discovered the fresh food market on the last visit in Oct. Thought it was excellent, found the quality of the fruit & veg to be very good. Lovely selection of meat, cooked meat and fish. We had a couple of lovely BBQs with the food we got there. Found the bread lady sold out quite early. They also do a nice coffee at the snack bar.

The municipal market (half way up restaurant hill turn left and it is on the right) has lovely fresh fruit, veg and meat/fish but you need to get there early, it is more expensive than the market in Lagoa or Silves as it gears itself to the tourists more than locals. The small supermarket just up from Smilers bar on the out road from the square is very good indeed. Blue Rock butcher (on the in road from Lagoa on the right side after Millennium bank) has the most wonderful selection of meats and deli.
Unfortunately Modelo is no longer and is now another supermarket (can't even begin to spell the name!) which is good but not as good as Modelo. There is also the Intermarche on the road to Carvoeiro from Lagoa which stocks just about everything you would need.
There are plenty of wine shops in the village as well as good selections in the supermarkets, taste is very personal but we really enjoy the wines from the Alentejo region (to the far west of the Algarve) There is a co-operative Adaga in Lagoa which does tours and sells to the public, worth a visit.

Jump on the Lagoa bus and go to the local fish & veg market your euros go further than in CVO , Modelo is no more , but again a bus ride into Lago provides you with Pingo Doce or Netto for cheaper food , or a bit of a walk , taxi to Pao e Acucar ( the old Modelo ) bit more expensive but large fish and meat area ( still cheaper than Intermarche ! ). :?

For better quality, the traditional market is the place to go: fruit, vegetables, bread, fish, meat...

Actually that is where I tend to do most of my BIG shop at Pao e Acucar ( the old Modelo) It's pretty good on the ol fruit and Veg and the fish is good too, fresh prawns to die for. Gary can't stand Intermarche becasue unless he can move around with the trolly easily he gets a strop on. He doesn't like supermarket shopping at the best of times so we find this supermarket easy to maneuver around, we get in and get out pretty quick ad back on the sun terrace with a bottle of beer or three tut

You are on the ball when it comes to Intermarche, It is a bit of a shambles.
plus sometimes you can think that you are back in Tesco,s if it were not for the prices.

its the only place in portugal that I have seen the same brands of S African &, Australian wines that are in our local Uk supermarkets.

They are obviously targetting the Tourist who must have " home away from home "
