Another gardening question
Hello all,
Maybe Ellie/E-llen can answer this one for me - I was looking to buy some cypress trees to bring balance into my garden. I do not know if the ones here in the Algarve are Italian Cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens ) or they go by another name ?
I was looking to buy one that was semi-mature (Not sure where from though)
Last question : Honest
Is it possible to buy those ready made lawns I keep seeing being laid down on Ground Force here in the Algarve ???
Cheers all

Hi there,
Here's a web link to a German guy in Moncarrapacho with a full price list (With English and Botonical name included)
http://www.algarvestart.com/baumschule.htm
Very much a home grown affair in the back of your house type centre but pretty good nonetheless
Regards
James

I don't live in Algarve now Lesley..so I can't recommend where you'd buy your trees/shrubs....have you looked in the garden centre next to Shoeworld,Lagoa? I was there last September but can't remember all that was on offer.
When we lived in Lagoa I used to go to a Dutch chap who had a nursery on the old Silves road(going from Lagoa) but I should think its long gone.
But I recal that, Sonia who works in Lagoas cafe, told me there is a place on way to Big One....she worked there at one time....that sells pottery & plants/shrubs. I did write the name down..but Ill have to go through my notes to find it.
Sorry I can't be more help to you.
Javis..Im not sure about this .but I think you'd recognise from label..ideal for what youre looking for..you can clip these using for a hedge (not sure what you have in mind)..look for ones with short compact branches.also a good strong 'leader' top.
Youre not talking 'synthetic' lawn here are you Javis
Only joking..I wish you and Lesley good luck in finding your trees/shrubs.
Ill try to find the name of that place in my diary..but living there you may both know it?
Good gardening

Thank you Elle, very helpful. I know the garden place near the International School, driven past it, but never gone in. One of those things that if you don't need it you don't look! I am out in CVO in a weeks time but only for three days, so hope to get a look when I go out again in April, still only for four days this time, but should have more time to look round, which is why I asked the question on the Forum first, doing a bit of homework!! It is always good to get feedback from those who know!

Youre most welcome Lesley..I will have a look later for that place where 'Sonia' recommended.
But Ive just seen above that James has put on a very useful website.
I must say Lesley..that it all sounds very exciting, you starting a brand new garden..wonderful..a blank page to start with!
I had that here in Lincs ,when we moved here 4 years ago. Only hedges and 2 trees (but loads of bulbs which were a blessing)..and boy has it blossomed in those few years. Lot of hard work (and dosh !) but all well worth it.
I sincerely hope my 'next' garden is out there in Algarve..and when it happens..Im going to call on you (and James) for some guidance
All the best......Ellie
sorry..I didnt look properly before..thought you were in CVO..but thats James....

Thank you for being so helpful everyone
We bought a run down house just outside Cvo and after the builders had gone the front garden was just a flattened car park!! so have been doodling at home in Somerset with the help of photos, trying to come up with ideas. Now that I know what I would like to do with the garden, it is a case of sorting out the automatic watering (as we are not there all the time) and buying trees, shrubs, plants etc. Does anyone know if you can grow daffs and other bulbs in Algarve? what English flowers thrive there as well, I would like a few good old English type plants along with the mediterranean ones.
Thanks again, you lot are such a helpful bunch, it is great to talk

The gardens I attended (local to Lagoa/Porches) did have quite a few plants from bulbs. You can grow these (from bulbs ,corms, Rhizomes et al)
Crocosmia (I love these)
Freesia
cyclamen
Iris
dahlia
narcissus
tulip(large flowered ones best grown in pots)
Amaryllis belladonna
Anemone(de caen)
Agapanthus ..of course.
How about lavender ..English & French...and other herbs
Hope this a help..and thanks for giving me a break from the typing....
D'you know Lesley..youve got us thinking of doing the same thing now!
Buying a small old house ..and starting a new garden..wonderful!
Im going to have a look around Lagoa when I come out.......anyone know of any little old houses for sale in that neck of the woods?
I bet your gardens going to look a picture

Thank you thunderbolt but we have now sorted out garden maintenance man, hubby of house maintenance woman!!! Very good, just I like to choose the plants and trees etc, makes me feel that I had something to do with the whole thing, even tho I am miles away in England!!
Ellie, go on go for it! We have had so much fun renovating our place, the end result is fab (oops showing my age) can't wait for this summer so we can reap the benefits of our own place in the sun.
