cats in carvoeiro, algarve
Both Richard and I are animal lovers and I do tend to feed the pusscats when we come out on our all too infrequent visits.
Whwere we stayed last time at O'Castello he feeds the pusscats that sit outside his residential door and accross the road where he parks the car. In the kitchen is a massive tub of catfood and water we all leave for him for the little ones.
In regards to the quantity there at present a neutering campaign could be set up by right minded residents and us holiday makers to make it work effectively.
In Silves the Cafe below the castle, mind gone blank, the one run by Mike, the Brit,,he set up a neutering campaign for dogs both feral and domestic and I believe the same for pusscats in Silves that the cafe backs.
I suggest someone pops in and has a word with him who lives out there and gets help and advice from him. Then a system could be set up for CVO for both cats and dogs both feral and domestic. Once you obtain a tame vet who will undertake the ops at a reduced rate and run by a bevvy of like minded people collecting the animals and taking them to the vet, people will get on board and donations will start. As a start I am sure this site could start the fund raising andwe all donate where and when possible. We could get this site then running as a charity to aid these poor unfortunate creatures. I am sure there are enough people out there that can help with donations, of bedding, animal cages etc all the things required.
Perhaps this is something to be discussed on a separate format and even at one of the meetings that I thought was going to be set up around the UK. Once Richard and I have left tge farm in September and we have aplace to live I would be more than happy to take a big role inthis quest, until then if someone wants to get to grips with it I am happy to assist.

We have owned a house at Rocha Brava for 12 years and have been aware of a growing problem with stray cats. The management ask owners and guests not to feed them as not everyone likes them and they can soon become pests, but they are given food by the maids at their station, and when we are out there we buy packs of biscuits and leave them with the maids. Two years ago there were about 30 cats in the vicinity of our house and the management were trying to arrange for vets to sterilise them. A team of vets from Germany and Holland were visiting that summer to carry out operations across the Algarve, but because of the numbers involved they didn't make it to Carvoeiro. However, when I was there in November the number of cats had reduced considerably, and we were advised that a number had been "taken away" and the remainder sterilised. We are currently down to about 6 cats, and when I was there last month we were visited on a daily basis by a very pretty ginger cat who looked well-fed, but enjoyed a saucer of milk. I am not particularly a cat lover, although I have had to live with two for the past 30 years. My wife is an ardent cat lover, and one of the reasons that I cannot get her to visit CVO more often is that she is very upset to see the stray animals, both cats and dogs. Although many of these animals have become feral because they have been abandoned, they are friendly and not at all like true feral cats.
One of our strangest experiences with animals in CVO is that about six years ago my wife put down an old blanket overnight for a visiting cat to sleep on, and one morning I opened the curtains to see that a lovely looking dog had usurped the cat. It seemed very weak and had difficulty in standing but managed to wag his tail. After my wife had fed it (with cat biscuits) it was able to stand, and in fact followed me when I went for a walk. It appeared again the next night and we fed it , and when I walked down to the beach it followed me again. It soon found another dog to play with on the beach and I didn't see it again. My wife was quite upset that I had "lost" it.

Last year on rather wobbly walk back from CVO in the early hours we were joined by a dog who followed us all the way back to Rocha Brava. We were amazed when we opened the front door in the morning to find the dog curled up asleep on the doormat. It didn't seem to want anything except company. We were leaving that day and as we walked towards reception with our new found four legged friend our taxi came down the road towards us. As the taxi pulled up the dog started barking at it as if to say 'leave my mates alone - they're with me!'. It was quite touching that a dog that was obviously neglected and didn't have a home still gave unconditional companionship and loyalty to humans.
I was really pleased when I visited later in the year with my family and saw the dog again wandering around near the main swimming pool. Hopefully he is still OK but I didn't see him when we came at Christmas.

I like all animals (except snakes 
) but prefer the wild sort..
I have a sort of love/hate relationship with cats(we don't have any as pets). They are welcome in my garden as I think they help keep vermin down (we had a visiting rat a year or so ago)..but and its a big BUT, I have seen them take birds from my bird table (natural behaviour I know)
But I do find them interesting creatures..and very independent. We have one that comes in the garden and he seems 'wild'....very large marmalade colours and big heavy tail. But as I say, I never shoo them away.
Ive been writing children's stories and I send them to my youngest grandson for his approval..one is of a cat that walks upright, its spooky and he loves it
Have the cats all gone from the roof above the tourist place in CVO's square?
p.s. Just to say its started snowing again here..BIG flakes!

- really pleased to hear that they have got on top of the problem at RB. Last year there were just too many and the more my wife fed the more turned up as if they were passing the info on to all their mates!
We knew some of the gardeners were helping them and we actually had a litter born close to our place. We moved them to a safer place than they were in when born and when we left for home the gardeners took care of them.
I think a limited number on the site is great as most people do like them and also they stop any vermin infestation.
Is the large tabby Tom still around by the main pool? He belonged to the pool maintenance guys and strolled around as if he owned the place. Last time we saw him he was getting a bit fat and obviously didnt rely on the tourists!!

Thank you to everyone who responded to my post regarding the Carvoeiro cats. I really hadn't anticipated such a response and am overwhelmed.
To those of you who approved of my actions, thank you for your support. Yes, it was meant to be an act of compassion and kindness, however misguided that might have appeared. I'm a soft touch with animals and humans alike, often to my detriment but I don't think I can change. I'm glad I'm not on my own.
Those of you who disapproved, I take on board what you are saying. I'm sure the words "interfering", "irresponsible and "self-indulgent" crossed your minds, if not actually voiced. But I'm sorry, the pathetic cries of these animals really got to me. Even my husband was upset and normally he's not at all sentimental when it comes to animals.
Please be assured all villa owners. I would never encourage any animal into a property. That is where I draw the line. I might be an animal lover but I am also house-proud. I make no apology for that. I am even more house-proud when it comes to other peoples' properties.
Regarding doantions to charities, well, that is another issue. Where and how people donate their money is a very personal matter and I would not wish to comment. I would not want to generalise or be judgemental.
Just to finish, yes, I came across stray dogs too. The cafe owners told me that the big black labrador type dog had been abandoned by his owners. That was on my last night! Where does it end?
