Listening and Watching via internet

Hi guys, HELP NEEDED please - is it just me being thick or am I doing something wrong. Lots of people say they listen to their radio stations back in the UK and watch stuff via internet - mine says "not available outside the UK" WHY? Is there something I need to press or install? Very annoying, prior to coming to live here, I know I have listened to the radio via my laptop so why will it not let me do it now? aaagghh!!!

There is always the wonderfull " KISS FM " with probably the worst radioDJ,s and adverts I have heard.
( I have in mind the two old DJ,s from Harry Enfields TV prog when ever I listen to it )

eg. Where is albooofera ??, laygoss.Portimayo.

Do they really think we are fooled by adults manupulating there voices to sound like children on one partular advert that plays throughout the day ( the Portuguese version uses real children ).

OK so it must be down to advertising revenue but can,t we have something better.

Thank god for satelite and Radio 4 and 5.

Funny enough used to be able to watch BBC Iplayer when it first came out and I live in Holland. Not anymore also applies to BBC radio stations it has some legal ramifications apparently. They can tell by your IP address that your not from the glorious isle. I find this a bit strange as I can watch the BBC channels on the tele here but I hear they are looking into it..... Cannot get ITV or whatever you call it because of the advertising restrictions.

Hiya, you can't watch via iplayer outside the UK but you can listen to the radio through BBC 2 radio - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/
Just click on the listen live link, we also listen to the radio and watch the major TV channels through Sky.

Ha Ha! Thank you have just managed to get radio 2 on my lap top - great for when I am at the office. I know we can get it thru satellite (Sunday mornings would not be the same without Steve Wright Sunday Love Songs) - I know, sad - but hubby and I have had this ritual for quite some time now, from 9am till 11am - sitting on our terrace, sun shining, coffee n bacon butties, listening to Steve's dulcit tones - sort of eases us into the day, which after spending the past 16 years working almost every Sunday is perfect bliss

AND found something else out, we tended to lose ITV after about 6pm, got told we would have to have a bigger dish (500 Euros or such like) - discussing with a friend, (who is Portuguese), added ITV Border Scotland to our channels and hey presto, ITV is perfect - tosh to the new dish.
(As I write this, This Morning on TV, good old Fern and Phil, (teenage daughter off school ill, usual thing - lying on settee, blanket, hot water bottle, TV remote, hubbys turn to play Nurse, am off to Network Lunch at Garbe!)
Finally, my favourite radio station here is Radio Commercial, love it, great way to pick up bits of Portuguese and at Christmas they did a great version of Maria Carey's All I want for Christmas is You - really funny.

After 18 months here I have only just discovered 'Commercial' - it's great isn't it? Lots of American and UK songs to keep me entertained, and enough well-pronounced Portuguese to make me think I'm practising the language at the same time!

Now - what about BBC Radio 4? I'm surviving on podcasts of the Archers and Woman's Hour, but does anyone know if you can get it live?

Also, does it take up masses of internet allowance (or whatever it's called) to have live radio on the computer as this is a big issue in our house?!

Kiss FM has to be the worst radio station on the planet - but it has The News from The Algarve for us sun-deprived Carvoeirians here in the UK. It is not perfect as it is usually badly read by 'Boring Bob' (as he is referred to in our house) - but it keeps us in touch until The Resident and The Portugal News arrives.

The two UK radio stations we listen to on our Laptop, when we are in Carvoeiro are Radio 2 and 4 and when it doesn't stream properly - I put on the TV and get them through Sky.

We do have the pixelating problem late in the evening on Sky, even if we change to Border and others. The man who sells the dish wants me to buy a bigger one and assures me the problem will go away - we'll see what happens after we move permanently later this year. I would like to be able to receive Portuguese TV (for the football) but can't on the TV I brought from the UK. Any suggestions?

He will be known as "Boring Bob" in our household from now on " today something happened in the Algarve !! ".

We only lose signal strength when it rains heavily.
We have no problems picking up PT TV on our Sony but we had to get cable installed ( needed it for phone and IT ).

We use CABO excellent service, good range of progs incl no of English speaking plus did not have to use them as my ISP, connect to AOL through the box provided. Reasonable speed as well.

I would like to be able to receive Portuguese TV (for the football) but can't on the TV I brought from the UK. Any suggestions?

The UK and Portugal use different PAL TV systems so unless you have a multistandard TV one from the UK will not work properly in Portugal. If my memory is correct you will probably get a picture but not sound.

If you have a multistandard TV it should be a simple matter of selecting a different PAL standard until you get the right one.

If you connect via a DVD/VHS recorder bought in Portugal and use a Scart lead to connect then I think that should also work and would be cheaper than replacing the TV.

Our TV is a Sony digital model with an enormous back on it (its about 8 years old) - which will be demoted when we move to Cvo in preferrence to a newer slimmer model. We have Sky with the free channels only and that's enough for visits of 2-3 weeks at a time.

However, I have been looking at TVs during our recent visit at Christmas and the price difference compared to the UK for the same model ranges from 43% to 60% more in Portugal - even allowing for the exchange rate difference.

Is it not possible to modify modern TVs to switch between the Portuguese system and Sky?

With a modern TV you can view both Sky and local Portuguese channels. Connect the terrestrial aerial to the antenna in port and connect the Sky via a scart lead to one of the AV ports. Use the appropriate channels on the TV for terrestrial signals and the chosen AV channel for Sky.
