Pestana Golf Membership

Are any contributors to the forum members of this or any other golf club? Despite sky high prices i am finding it difficult to book tee times at all. I would therefore like to join a club and wondered if anyone had personal experience of this?

Hi Widge - my son is a member of Pestana and I am afraid it is just as difficult for a member to book tee times as it is for anyone else - you will of course be able to gain easy access to the weekly medals etc but outside of this there does not appear to be an easy solution.

Sometimes more tee times seem to become available on the day but we now actually book our golf before we book our flights!

We are about to join Morgado - it is not as expensive as Pestana and you are not knee-deep in ex-pats talking about 'home'.

Until such time as Morgado is fully developed (houses built etc) the golf membership is affordable and the two courses are excellent. It's worth a look.

I was told that both Pestana & Murgado are 2,000 euros per year for membership. Is that correct?

When I was considering Pestana the price was €2,350 - the same deal at Morgado is €1,850 + other benefits.

Last year I did a deal at Morgado/Alamos for 30 rounds on either of the courses with 15 buggy hires for €1500 which I think is good value.

I love Alamos in some respects it is very like Gleneagles. We always tee'd off at 07.30 and there was never anyone else on the tee before 08.00. Millionaires golf!!!

Why Join a club ??, there are surely enough seasonal deals and discount booking agencies to more than cover the costs/benefits of membership.

We have just played two rounds on Morgado/Alamos for 70euros each ( 35/round incl buggy ).Same last summer.
In November it was higher but if we take an average of 50 euros/round
compared to a membership of 2000euros we would have to play more than 40 times to benefit from membership.

There are good deals at Silves and Alto ( both now owned by Pestana ).

As has been discussed before is there any merit in a CVO golf society ?

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate that it really isn't economical to join unless you play every week but................if you can't get on the course at all it starts to defeat one of the benefits of owning a villa near a golf course!

What did you have in mind EMM?

How would the society work and how would they negotiate tee times and rates?

There is society called Golf for Greys (forgive me if you are fortunate not to have any grey hair) that, I believe, has favourable terms with a number of courses and might be useful to you.

I avoid it because I do want to enjoy the company of the many nationalities we have around us in The Algarve - not just ex-pat Brits whose lives are dominated by and who lament the events of Constipation Street and all the other 'soap opera' dross we have to endure on TV. Before you all jump-up and suggest that I can always turn it off - I do but then I don't want to have it discussed when in company.

Sorry - rant over - but Golf for Greys might suit you

Unfortunately Morgado is no longer the quiet place it once was.

Construction is now underway with the hotel complex and access roads around the estate.

The biggest distraction howver is the noise from the new race track which
can be heard on race and practice days.

Seems to me as though it would be a good idea to have a forum here dedicated to Golf - much the same as there are forums dedicated to Restaurants, Property Ownership, etc.

I'm sure there would be a suitable resident that would be willing to act as moderator.

It could provide an area for tips on getting good deals and tee times and opinions on courses etc.

It could also be used by anybody looking for a new opponent or to make up numbers.

If enough people used it then perhaps a society could develop from it.

That explains the ease with which my membership offer was accepted.

We played over Christmas and New Year and had no noise pollution - the builders were on holiday. A friend played last Thursday and said there was a lot of construction traffic around but had no impact on their round - negative or positive.

Golf for greys offer cut price golf but you have to join at I think a 70 euro fee then a 50 euro yearly fee but you can contact numerous golf companies that can book you times at the exact same prices for free....I really cannot see the point in joining it unless you do not have people to play with.
