Ellie , here is the translation : Is here anybody who speaks finnish(suomi,
suomalainen) and hope i don't make others angry by writing in finnish.

Well,...in Finland we have to speak Swedish,English and Finnish.
Plus voluntarily(like me) Russian and German. It's easier to speak than
write..i guess??

I need translation again please Gerry...is this old Irish speak/Gaelic?
How marvellous to able to speak 5 languages Finn..but as you say not so easy to write......
I managed to have reasonable conversation with my Port. friend..but when she asked me to write down recipes for english meals she liked ..it took me literally 'hours' to translate from english cookbook..using Port.dictionary...
Some people seem to have a natural ability with languages.
When my son taught English in Egypt..one of his collegues spoke 7 languages fluently plus 'middle English'!
But....he said there were 2 words that seemed to work in any country if you were pestered by anybody(I.E.someone trying to sell you a camel!) and they were 'F---k Off!' Said it worked every time

Forgot to say...my daughter speaks Russian..which I love the sound of...she was quite fluent...but as they say..if you dont use it ..you lose it!
I loved listening to that chap on BBC1s 'Airport' ...was his name 'Jeremy Sprake'?..he worked for the Russian airline..
I always think Portuguese sounds more eastern european than western!

Portuguese actually sounds a bit Russian. I've lost my Russian years ago
and same way has happened with German

Not so difficult language: Those cyrillic alphabets are weird at the
beginning but after 50 years learning it's going to be oukkie doukkie!

I find it the most impressive of languages Matt..my daughter speaks it quite well...but you do need to be in the country and be among the people to practise dont you think?
Russian the most impressive.
French and Italian the most romantic!

But others may think differently?

Its a real learning curve on here......the Finnish and now Portuguese for okey dokey......whats (blx) Digger please?
I have no knowledge of Scandinavian languages..do Swedes/Fins/ Norwegians/ Danes..all understand each other Finn?
or perhaps the Finns consider themselves closer to Russians?

Ellie, I don't think that the Finnish people consider themselves closer to Russians. (The Russians took a part from Finland in the "winter war" during WWII)

Although there used to be a joke about the Finnish president Kekkonen.
I hope Finn is not mad at me when posting it here! I goes like this:
Why does Kekkonen uses double layers of toiletpaper? So he can send a copy to the Kremlin!

Finland is a western country. They are as close to the Estonians, like the Dutch are to the Belgians. Finnish and Estonian are almost the same languages.

So Ellie, specially for you something in Estonian (maybe Finn can understand it)
