Maids' wages.

Would anyone be prepared to say approx. how much maids wages should be for a 3 bed, 2 bath rental villa and roughly how many hours that would entail? Thanks

We pay €220 per month - for 14 months (holiday and Christmas are the extras). She is self-employed.

She is engaged to work 4 days per week but when we are there we cut that down to two. When we rented she would work 4 days per week as well as the changeover day. As we don't rent anymore she makes sure the place is kept clean, dry and secure. She makes sure the heating is on and the fire lit for us when we arrive in the Winter - perfect.

When we move to Carvoeiro permanently later next year I suspect we will have to review that arrangement.

A good maid is worth her weight in gold - ours is no exception. Choose carefully and take references.

I pay for the year plus bonus and in a way I object to that arrangement, I'd prefere to pay more when her services are required, usually 12 weeks a year, I can't see what they do in the winter apart from airing the place and checking security every now and then.

A friend who lives on the Val De Milho says he never sees maids around in the winter, loads in the summer. I'm not mean but the same thing applies to the garden. they come and scratch the ground in the winter, nothing to do.

Costs of maintaining the property have escalated and I know potentialy costs will increase further this year. I've had companies interested in managing the facility for me with revolutionary ideas, but knowing Portugal I'll take my time before I commit myself to engaging them, I've got to reduce costs somehow.

I'm just thinking out loud here:
From the maid's point of view, she has to make a living that pays her food and rent for 12 months a year. If her only earning period were the summer, then one presumes that her rates for the summer would have to be that much higher to compensate for the lean times.
UNLESS that is, the maid could find alternative employment in the winter times, and as far as I can see, The Algarve does not have any effective "winter-only" economy to sustain this.
(By the way, this argument is valid for many other businesses - bars, restaurants, ice creams, beach beds etc. but they have potentially more scope for a larger summer income)
