Hi everyone

Just spent the day on the beach in lovely sunshine and Portsmouth won can it get any better..

Well yes just found how to get on the internet with a pay as you go and its called Kanguru

So bought a USB stick with a SIM card cost 59 euros and then it costs basically 1 euro a day for when you want to use it minimum is 10 euros and the speed is 512 mbs which I find acceptable.

You can even sit on the beach if your sad enough and surf the net

Weather forecast for the next 2 days is total sunshine wey hay hope you Brits are all enjoying the rain !!!

Can you provide more details on your Pay AS You Go internet access material. I only found Kangaru sells pc hardware but no info on how to use anything they sell to surf the web. Thanks.

The details I can give you is that you can buy this device in most phone shops but I got mine from Wortens in Guia.

Its a USB stick with a SIM cards and works just like a pay as you go mobile phone in essence. It costs 59 euros with 10 euros free (10 days on the internet). You can then pay to add days when you need them which can even be done at an ATM machince or at one the mobile phone shops.

I have a phone number (Portuguese) where they may also help 800 93 20 20.

Its ideal I think for people that just come out now and then and dont want to pay a monthly cost

The speed seems ok but maybe not if you want to do massive downloads which I think is limited to 300mb

Thanks for the details. I had read a few months ago about the prepaid broadband service coming to Portugal This is excellent as many of us Canadians take our laptops with us to Portugal to stay in touch with what is going on back home. This will make it a lot easier and cheaper too, especially when some of us are there for two months or more. Wonder if the speed is fast enough for streaming. I have watched on my laptop hockey games from back home in previous years.

It is all there. This one is run by Optimus. Vodaphone and TMN have their versions too. You can also get thirty day plans for 30 euros. It is looking better all the time.

We, too, took our laptop with us last winter and found that our apartment was within range of a secure private wifi service. We were able to buy time on it for a very reasonable rate (about 1€/hr) compared to some of the commercial services available (5€/hr). It was very convenient and, of course, a great way of keeping in touch with family and events back home. But, we were just lucky to be within range of the service.

We will be unable to go to Carvoeiro this winter

but I would be interested in how you make out with this, Hoser, for when we return next winter. It sounds like a pretty good solution to the "staying in touch" problem.

So, it's sunny in Carvoeiro (sigh): after a pretty nice autumn, we've had our first snowfall and a forecast low of -11C (for tomorrow nite). Winter's arrived!

Gary, Forester, I checked out the other sites and they all seem to be similar to your Kangaru plan. I also looked at Snowbird's info on the owner's forum and I think his plan may be different. The USB plug-in looks like it only started this August, whereas he has been using his plan since last year. From all the providers' sites, the info appears to indicate that the service is prepaid just like their prepaid cell phone service. You buy time and can top up and extend all the service you want. The Providers are also giving free WiFi time when you buy the package that includes the USB modem.

If you check EBay there are unlocked USB modems for sale but from what I see the ones you get with the plan are cheaper. Only problem is that just like cell phones if they are locked you are stuck to that Provider.

Will keep you all informed and hopefully vice versa. Intertesting what Snowbird has to say once he is there.

I am currently in North Carolina enjoying an extended summer with golf and beautiful temperatures. It is interesting to know that Carvoeiro and North Carolina are at similar Latitude and have similar temperatures most of the year. Only difference is that hurricanes come through here along the coast and winter has greater temperature highs and lows. It all comes to an end this week with my return to eastern Ontario. Back to the real world of cold and snow. Plus my kids have left me all the leaves to rake when I get back.
