Spring In Algarve

Post by Ellie »

I Had really nice e-mail yesterday from lady in Ontario. Both she and husband and some friends are coming out to Algarve next week..their very first visit to Portugal.
After some very kind words about my stories (she said they were a help in visualising the country) she said how much they were looking forward to the trip..especially after the severe winter they have had!
I told her that she wouldn't be disappointed and tried to describe Algarve springtime..wild flowers ..almond blossom..as well as blue sky, warmth and sunshine. Theyll be staying at Rocha Brava.so of course I recommended the lighthouse area for walking.
Its been almost a spring day here in UK today..a pleasure to do my garden job and spend some time in my own too.
On a day like this..you suddenly become aware how wonderful and resilient plant/wildlife is..and notice the tiny heads of snowdrops just opening-beautiful purple/yellow Iris reticulata- and groups of daffodils showing everwhere..the flowers still hidden but in a few weeks ...these too will give us a splendid show.... as the garden and countryside wakes up for the spring performance! :)
Tell me..is the 'Bermuda buttercup' starting its ramble through the Algarve? I love this yellow 'weed'.... and I think..yellow really is the colour that denotes spring..
Not really a topic I suppose..but wanted to write my feelings here on this beautiful sunny day................
in case it all changes tomorrow!

It certainly feels like spring here at the moment, lots of blossom around and what I assume to the 'bermuda buttercup'!

Today has been a bit overcast, but in general the weather has been perfect for the last couple of weeks - we probably could do with some rain!

Ive forgotten the 'latin/proper' name for the Bermuda buttercup-the yellow flowered weed--I prefer wildflower--that spread and rambles its way over Algarves countryside, even encroaching on the road sides.
I read..that it was brought there by a South African..a long long time ago...he went home to S.A. and brought cuttings/plants back to Algarve as he felt homesick for the flowers of the 'Veld' (not sure of spelling/or correct word).
I suppose, others have brought flowers from that wonderful country and have established them in Algarve?
Many plants of S.A are 'at home' here in England now..Ive seen 'Osteospernums' growing in the wild on the edge of our town near here in summertime having been planted by a local. But somehow..they look a little out of place..
However ..they do brighten our lives dont they..and what would life be without the beauty and colour of nature? :)
