koh samui

Post by cazzy7 »

Found koh samui at the end of our hol in 2005 so only ate there once but it was lovely so when we visited this sept tried it out and the food was lovely the chicken sate is really nice and all the dishes we tried for main course were really good we ate there twice and enjoyed everything we ordered. The prawn fried rice was really nice and we had a lovely banana and coconut pudding that looked awful but was really lovely. Overall we found the food service and atmosphere really good and will be going again on our next visit.

One of our favs. too! The waiters hover a little too much - but are always at your beck and call. Great tastes.

Took a portuguese freind and his better half there once. He is the kind of guy who eats bitoque or febras, normally spiced with some black pepper or, if he really pushed it, a drop or two of piri-piri.

Normally, I know the spicy, extra-spicy and "Oh my God, that stings!"spicy dishes off by heart, but that night I somehow got it confused - maybe due to the fact, that he was interrogating me about every single bloody dish.

So instead of the mildly spicy dish he was looking to try, I recommended the "omg, that stings" which was also conveniently mis-labelled on the menu.
When it arrived, I could see by the coloration (slightly green, slightly glowing), that this was most certainly not mildly spicy. His first bite confirmed this.
He was too proud to send it back, so he put on a pair of rubber nappies and chowed down.
Long story short: tears, sweat and an extremly miffed girlfriend (she accused me of trying to implode her boyfriend) sent the conversation and the rest of the evening down the tube.

The food there is excellent and there are certainly levels of spicy-ness for every taste - just be sure that you confirm with the waiter, how spicy you would llike your food and if your choice is the right one.

A good measure for "spicy" is the prawn soup, which imho falls pretty much into the middle on the spicy scale.

This was one of my recommended places, and we've eaten there quite a few times, but never again.
I think its changed ownership, or management or something, as the chairs are all new and different.

My OH is strictly vegetarian, and they have a big sign outside advertising "dishes for vegetarians". We had a long discussion with the maitre about what to order, and my wife seemed very happy with the choices. Her "vegetarian green curry" arrived packed with chicken. We sent it back and some time later another dish that looked completely different arrived.

We each ordered one starter, and chose to make do with one portion of rice.

At the end of the meal, the bill arrived.
Each starter was doubled !!
They charged for the extra portion of rice needed when my wife's corrected meal arrived, having sent back the dish where she'd dished up her rice with the chicken.

Ok, mistakes happen.

I very politely called the waitress over to challenge the bill. She shook her head and went back to daydreaming. The maitre was too busy watching the football on the telly.

And my wife was outside getting sick into a plastic bag, so did not have any more time to argue. Rounded the bill up to leave a 50c tip and ran.

Unless I see MANY rave reviews here, this restaurant is now off our list of places to go.

We've been to this restaurant twice, the first time we thought it was so poor that we wouldn't go back, the second time friends chose the venue so we thought we should give it another go, we shouldn't have.

Exactly how we feel now. The first couple of years we quite liked it, but this year it was awful. The original owner was still there and his Thai wife cooked. Most times when we went there it was off season and the place was empty -but it was good and didn't matter. We will never go back there either..

 Just like to say that we got take away from here tonight, ordered what we wanted and then went down to Brady's bar for a quick drink, back to the Thai and within 5 mins our order was ready, all lovely and hot, well cooked and very tasty.

We have always liked this place, it is still run by the same owner, so no change of hands as posted before. You have to like hot spicy food if you go for anything that is possibly spicy and hot!.

I had the chicken in oyster sauce with vegetables and mushroom with rice, we also had two of the spicy beef with vegetables and basil leaf, and one vegetable green curry (it was nice to see that they have cooled down the green curry a little, it doesn't completely blow your head off now!!) all given top marks by my family, we think it was even better than the Chinese we had from Lagoa the other night.

Hi Lesley Jean

We came out for a week in June and had yet another lovely meal here so have been surprised to see a lot of negative reviews but we will definitely be going again when we are there in Sept maybe we will try a takeaway :D
The only negative comment is the service isn't always very good the waitress goes off in a world of her own

cazzy, they had two new waiting staff who seemed to be very much on the ball and very friendly so that side of it had improved a lot.

We ate there in Feb. thsi year and maybe because they were not busy - the food seemed a bit dull and not as good as other years. This time of year they are busy and have fresh ingredients. Will try agian in the winter.

 OK, I am now sorry to admit this is not one of my favourite places anymore, we went there a few night ago now and altho the food was lovely the service left a great deal to be desired, a little too over friendly by the waitress who had me clearing the table as she couldn't reach due to the fact that so many tables have been squeezed in to it. Then at the end we literally did get two bills one for our table and one for someone else when we pointed this out she was not amused and almost told us that she would decide which one we paid.... ha!!!! we paid the one which was ours and left.... no tip, no thank you and no goodbye.... shame tho as I love Thai.

Koh Samui Restaurant

Post by Downdie »

We visited this restaurant last week and it was the most disappointing meal of our holiday. Having visited Thailand on many occassions we found this restaurant to be very poor.

When we arrived we requested a table indoors but were told by the waitress that it was booked out for a party (some people were sitting indoors) so we sat outside. As the evening progressed, no party arrived and the indoor seating remained fairly empty until we left at 11.15.

The food was not of good quality (and not authentic Thai) despite it being very expensive (8 Euros for a plate of soup). Service was the worst I've ever experienced (our meal took 2½ hours to serve). The waiter and waitress were dismissive of any requests (we had to ask for the bill twice) and ignorant (the waitress stood over us while we were looking out our cash to pay the bill and we heard her telling other customers to "wait a minute"). The waiter did not seem to understand English and had to get the waitress to speak and take orders on his behalf.

We are now beginning to wonder if we paid for someone elses food as our bill came to 58 Euros (2 people). We had a plate of soup each, two main courses, 1 rice, 1 bottle of (warm) water and a bottle of house white wine. This was most expensive meal of our holiday.

Although this restaurant advertises a Thai Chef our impression was that it is German owned.

We should have read the warning signs early and realised that the only Thai thing about this restaurant is the Thai national flag hanging over the door. Not a good example if you are embarking on Thai food for the first time.

Others in the restaurant at the same time were also complaining. We would usually leave a tip but felt this restaurant did not warrant any praise. I'm sure they do not get a lot of return trade.
